Arrival Story: They were born out at the sheep center at Texas A&M University as mixed breeds they were threatened with being destroyed. We managed to get in contact with enough people to be able to rescue him and his sister, unfortunately we still have no information on their other three sisters, we just hope they are in good homes and wish we could have taken them all.

Bio: Wicket's momma is shown in the fourth picture, her name is Sugar and she is an AWESOME dog! She was an Anatolian Shepherd/Akbash mix that accidentally ended up with a purebred Australian Shepherd. The babies were born under an awning in a birthing box and the first day we went out to see them (their third day of life!) Sugar let us poke around a little. We found that there were 5 pups, 4 girls and 1 boy. I knew then the boy would be mine, when we held him his face was all squished up and eyes tightly closed and I thought he looked like an ewok, so he became Wicket. (lol, since then he's grown more handsome and no longer looks like an ugly ewok!) We were in contact with the grad student who was responsible for the dogs care (and his fiancé’s dog got Sugar pregnant in the first place) and the boy was going to be ours. Unfortunately the manager of the center was a nasty man who told us that because the dogs are a mixture of a guard and a herd dog they would be vicious and would be put down. I felt like crying, what a horrible thing to say about innocent puppies, all they would need would be a good home that would raise them correctly. We had been visiting the puppies every night (that's were a lot of his baby pictures came from, those cold nights) and bringing Sugar some extra canned food to keep up her energy. At that time I decided to go to whomever I could go to to keep those puppies safe. Of course this didn't deter us very much; we just set up meetings with the grad student and met after the manager had left. The manager also decided to put Sugar out on pasture to teach her how to raise sheep dogs, so the puppies were living under a damp woodpile when they were only 2 weeks old. We were getting more and more worried about them, but Sugar was an excellent momma dog and kept them safe and sound, and their bellies round! Soon it was time for Christmas, and we had already made plans to be out of town, so the day we left we feed Sugar and extra special dinner and left. During the time we were gone the grad student wrote us and told us that even though the manager didn't want us to have them that we could come some night before the manager got back from the holiday to take him home. Needless to say we got back into town Christmas day and headed straight over. The conditions were bad, it looked like Sugar hadn't been feed for a few days and the pups were all huddled in the back of the woodpile. We gave Sugar two cans of food (all we had with us) and called Wicket to come out of the shelter. He and his sisters all came out to greet us and we picked Wicket up, put his collar on him (we'd bought it weeks ago) and were about to head back when I just couldn't leave the butterball. It was the biggest girl, she was so round and had a different coat that the other puppies, she was the one that would always sit at our feet and wait for attention when we fawned over Wicket. She did the same that night, sat there and looked up at us, I couldn't leave her, I don't know why, but I knew I had to take her home, so we took her and she was named Cranberry in accordance to the holiday's she was born around. Our house is a home now with our two wonderful puppies, Cranberry grounds us, and Wicket makes us laugh.
