Arrival Story:
For some reason I was in this new place-a shelter with a lot of other dogs. I was really quiet and shy. My new mom had been checking petfinder.com for weeks, looking for a collie to adopt. Not too many come from where she was looking. But this particular day (6/25/08) was the day she was finally going to go to the shelter. A quick check of the site revealed my picture! 'Hmmm', she thought.' A male and 7 years old-a collie cross. I'm not sure. I was hoping for a dog a little younger.' When she came into the room all the other dogs were barking their heads off. I just stood there looking at her. She went all the way around and then came back. 'Not sure if he's housebroken' read the profile. 'Hmmm.' I had been tied up outside for a while and came from Kentucky, was all they knew about me there. We went into another room where I wasn't sure what they wanted from me. There were treats, tho! Mom took me outside where I ran around a little and showed off my collie gait! We sat outside for a little while, mom hugged me a couple of times, and she was hooked! We went back inside where someone else wanted to see me, but it was too late for them! I was mom's! My fur was matted and I smelled pretty bad. But when mom started to brush me I didn't mind at all! Maybe I had been tied out for some time, but I seem to remember being groomed and I even know what sit means-I don't like to DO it, mind you, but I know what it means. I respond better to a hand command for that. I heal ever so slightly, too! I'm horrible on a leash, tho. Anyway, mom decided to have me shaved-start from scratch. So that was the next day. I ran and hid from every other person and really didn't like cars-they scare me. But I followed mom where ever she went-still do. The first couple weeks I sort of stayed out the way. But one night mom was talking to me and I just got up, went over to her and when she petted me I wagged my tail! I was happy! After that I started sitting on the couch with her and now I sometimes sleep with her! We've been going for walks (I'm still horrible on a leash, but I'm starting to get it! I love the wooded area we walk in...) and I don't try to run the other way when we meet up with other people! I'm still kinda shy about them, but I don't try to run away. I'm a little more comfortable with the cars going by here, too. I'm safe in the yard on the leash with mom. We can even walk down the street a little-if I stick close to mom (that heal thing again) I'll be safe! Oh, btw, I was housebroken-I was a little nervous when I first got home and peed in the house, but only that one time! I also do not bark much. I've only barked 3 times since I've been here. I growled at a cat that was visiting once and I do cry when mom leaves, but I'm pretty quiet otherwise! That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Gryffin
