"Here's my new little brother, Burt, in his new coat. Just like mine, but blue. It doesn't fit him as well as mine does, 'cuz he's a little underweight coming from the shelter..."
"I have a new brother. His name's Burt. He comes from my shelter, the Humane Society Calumet Area in Munster, Indiana. I'm on the left in this picture, the dog with the prettier tail..."
"Burt taught this ol' gal a new trick today... chasing SQUIRRELS!!!! I know to chase the bunnies at night, but I never paid much attention to Squirrels... this is FUN!"

Likes: walkies, car rides, being in the same room as her people
Pet-Peeves: not being able to sniff each and every clump of grass, bush, weed, hedge, tree for at least a minimum of 15 seconds... with her nose buried in the foliage
Favorite Toy: After living with us for nine months, she still has no interest in toys... how sad. But we keep trying :D
Favorite Food: Dixie understand treats now. She is a delicate little lady--only soft treats, and only small portions. We had to return the free bag of normal sized kibble for a bag of small bites :)
Favorite Walk: Dixie LOVES walkies... will still heel very nicely, but loves to explore! Anywhere bunnies, possums, kitties or other doggies have been and left messages for her to smell...
Best Tricks: Stealing our hearts in less than 24 hours. NEWSFLASH: After living with us for six months, six days, Dixie gave PAW for a treat! UPDATE: Dixie can give paw, sit UP to take a treat, and take a treat g e n t l y out of the Mom's mouth. TA-DA!!
Arrival Story: The Chicago Crew had just lost two of it's members--14 yr old Golden Retriever Remo the Red to renal failure and 9 yr old Golden LuckyLucy to cancer--and that left a very, very big hole in our lives. WINston XXLP is a wonderful, fabulous Bulldog who has us wrapped around his paw, but he's not a dog you can take out on walks or explore with. As adorable as he is, he's our fur-covered doorstop (but at the ancient Bulldog age of 11 1/2 he's earned that right!). Mum and Dad had recently heard about the plight of black dogs in shelters (in kill-shelters being black is almost a guaranteed death sentence because they get passed over for lighter-colored dogs until time runs out) and decided the next member of The Chicago Crew would be a beautiful Black Pearl! We found Dixie on Petfinder at a shelter in Indiana not too far from our wonderful vet, Dr. Mullings.
UPDATE: The unthinkable has happened. Our dearest bullyboy suddenly left for the Bridge not even a month after Dixie came to live with us. So many people have commented that WINston waited for Dixie to come before he felt he could leave us. Losing three in three months... Dixie came just in time to save us from unbearable sorrow.
Bio: Back in the beginning of February 2008, in the dead of a Midwest winter night, Dixie was dropped off after hours outside of the Humane Society Calumet Area in Munster, Indiana, by person(s) unknown. Dixie spent over six months at the shelter, and from what we were told, became a favorite of many of the staff.

Timing is EVERYTHING!!! Our old vacuum cleaner just bit the dust (sic) Monday. It lasted through THREE Golden Retrievers, an English Bulldog, a Whippet-mix, a Flat-coated Retriever, a Lab-mix, three cats and four foster litters of kittens!!!!!!!!! Not bad, really...
So, which Dyson Animal upright do you like and why? We have been debating the pros and pros ;) of the DC25 Ball and the DC28 Airmuscle. The Mom can finally get her Purple Animal (did I mention purple is her FAVORITE color even though it makes her look GREEN when she wears it? )
Please pawmail me if you have any suggestions...
p.s. my new brother Burt jumped out the car window when we got to the park today. The nut. Almost gave the Dad a heart attack! I WASN'T gonna mention it, but I couldn't help myself...
Today he yanked the Mom right off of her feet! Right down onto her hands and knees! It was a real surprise for all of us--me, Burt and the Mom. See, I was at the end of my 15' retractable leash, leaving a little "present" on the park grass for the Mom to pick up. Burt was standing next to the Mom, waiting. quitely. P a t i e n t l y. For once. Until he saw the SQUIRREL!!!!!
Burt lit out after that squirrel. Usually, the Mom runs after him, and I follow along. So when Burt hits the end of his leash, the Mom's forward momentum makes it no big deal. But today she was standing still waiting for me to finish. So, when Burt hit the end of his leash... BAM!!!!! Down the Mom went. Luckily, on the grass, not on the paved path.
The Mom dropped our leashes on the way down so she could break her fall with her hands. The leashes retracted, right into me and Burt. Good thing, that. It startled Burt and stopped him right in his tracks!
The Mom was on the ground saying "come, Burt, come". Every time Burt walked toward her, the leash banged into his side and he'd stop. She'd say "come, Burt, come" and he'd start toward her again. Then "bang" and Burt would stop again. This went on a couple of more times before he finally made it back to the Mom. I, of course, came back to the Mom right away. I've been paying attention to our trainer, Trixie, unlike some dogs I could mention...
Poor Mom. She had to stay home from work and ice her knee. And tomorrow is her birthday! Great present, Burt... a fat knee and a cane--the present that just keeps on giving! Sheeeeesh...
So Burt and I have been going to training class at PetsMart. Every Sunday afternoon. For an hour. With our trainer, Trixie ;) Last week was unbelievable. The Mom and the Dad brought this thing called a "coupler". I heard them tell Trixie that they hadn't used it in nine years--since Perky went to the Bridge. Seems they would "couple" Remo and Perky together to slow Remo down on their walks.
Trixie had the big idea to "couple" my brother Burt's harness to my harness so he would feel more secure with me right next to him. I tell ya, what a pain in the back!!! Trixie would say "come Dixie", and me, being the star that I am, would immediately try to come. But this 50 lb furry weight of a brother wouldn't move. I had to drag him several feet until he got the idea and got off his butt.
When he got the idea though, there was no stoppin' him. He dragged me ALL OVER! Up and down the aisles. Quick turns. Plowing through crowds. Careening around corners. Bouncing off displays. He was UNSTOPPABLE! And they thought this was a GOOD idea???
