Arrival Story:
We chose Smeagol (or rather he chose us) from a shelter in Independence, MO. He was a member of our family for only a few days when he became gravely ill. Our vet suspected that he had distemper and did not expect him to survive. Even though he had only been with us a short while, he had etched a place in our hearts and we knew we would do whatever it took to pull him through. For more than a week we stayed beside him, giving him Pedialyte from eyedroppers and spoonfeeding him baby food. Just when it looked as if he was not going to survive he turned the corner and began eating and drinking on his own. Now, five years later, he is the happiest 75 lb. 'puppy' we have ever seen and our veteranarian still marvels that he survived. We know that it was patience and a lot of love that pulled him through and kept him in our lives.
