   Leave a bone for Henry

Henry Boy, H Boy, Hen, Henny, Hound Boy, Handsome Lad

Doggie Dynamics:
not playfulvery playful

Quick Bio:

June 29th 2003

Food, me (mum), cuddles from his brothers and sisters, sleeping, his walks, belly rubs, ear rubs, and playing with me and his dad when we all shout or "woof woof woooo" loudly at each other.

When I have to go upstairs (he's not allowed up the stairs in case he damages his long back) so waits at the bottom all sad til I come back

Favorite Toy:
His plastic string of sausages. Started off with lots of sausages on it, now it only has 2 left. .....Have replaced that toy loads of times now

Favorite Food:
Roast beef, yorkshire pudding and gravy, pasta, cheese, lasagne, apples and carrots, sausages...actually, he loves ALL food. He's a Basset isn't he?!

Favorite Walk:
He loves ALL walks but especially the beach. Woofs like crazy everytime and never stops til we leave. He can go from "sleeping" to "excited walking mode" in 10 seconds flat

Best Tricks:
Giving 'the look' to get him out of trouble, or to get his own way. Whining loudly at 10am & 6 pm to tell me it's dinner time.Whining loudly at 9pm to tell me it's time for his Jumbone. Concertina's his back when his dad is playing chasey with him.

Arrival Story:
I was wanting another dog to help me over the grief for when my beloved Shepherd passed away (which I new was coming soon)and had always fancied a Basset Hound. Anyway someone told me not to get a Basset Hound as "they are boring dogs, who do nothing but sleep". Stupidly I listened to that advise and ended up getting a Jack Russel so the kids would have a "nice little doggy to play with". (Had one as a kid and know they make great family pets with good training). Anyway, a year later, I still hankered after a Basset so after thoroughly researching this breed, I found a breeder in Nottingham and they had a litter ready. Shortly before we went, I came across a litter in my local area. I was worried in case she was just a "backstreet breeder" and in it for the money, but she mated her girl, with a beautiful boy, who's known in the show world, and so I have Henry. He has a fantastic pedigree but to be honest that doesn't hold any importance. It's the dog I love not the line he came from, but it is reassuring to know he's bred from good stock. Oh by the way, as anyone owned by a Basset will know, there is absolutely NOTHING boring about them. They are so affectionate and so much fun. Not a day passes by without us all having a laugh with Henry. Basset's will always be my favourite breed of dog.

Henry loves his family so much, but I'm def his favourite (mum). He follows me everywhere, and when I go upstairs he'll lie at the bottom with his gorgeous face resting on the bottom step waiting for me to come back. WHen I get to the bottom he jumps up and kisses me all excitedly as if I've been away from him for too long, bless his little cotton socks. When we're out for walks he never wanders off. He'll run so far ahead of me, then stop, turn around, and wait for me to catch up. His face is a picture whilst he's stood waiting for me. It's as if he's saying "hurry up mum, we're nearly there". He does however sometimes have a "deaf ear" when we're out in the fields and he's sniffing intently at something - he can just switch off. But I tell his JRT brother Rocky to "go fetch Henry" and he runs at Henry barking, telling him that mum wants him, and then he'll then look over at me as if saying "oh yes, forgot about you there for a moment" and then they both come running back all excitedly cos they know they are clever boys. Team work, or what. (Update..)...I've been working with our local animal rescue, pawzforthought.org for the last 8 months, and during that time have fostered a few dogs. Henry's excellent behaviour has helped to teach these dogs good manners, amongst other things. He's been a great help, and soo understanding, and patient. He's been brilliant. He's my loving gentleman. Only thing is, I want another Basset now cos I just LOVE them so much.
