The Beginning:
Lola came into my work (Fog City Dog Lodge) to stay overnight with us just as any other dog would. There was a drop-off and pick-up date specified for her. Lola's then guardian asked that she stay for two weeks. She came into the facility malnourished, underweight (you could easily see her ribcage and her hipbones were protruding), and had horrible BM's. She was dropped off with no specifications to her diet (along with no food), had no belongings besides a collar and leash, and shuddered back whenever a human would lift up their leg (i.e. to untangle your leg from the leash) or raised their arm up. For the first two weeks we had her, we tried different types/kinds/brands of food to find the right diet for her, got her weight up (ribs and hipbones less visible), began socializing and exercising her regularly, and helped her gain trust with other people (specifically men). The day that Lola was due to be picked up, her then guardian was a no show. After many attempts (by myself and others) to get in touch with her guardian, he finally called back and asked if Lola could stay with us another two weeks (he was in the process of moving). Again, two weeks came and went and getting in touch with her guardian became harder and harder. Finally, after Lola had been with us for a about 6 weeks, her guardian told us that he was going through a divorce, couch hopping at friends houses with his 6 year old daughter and two cats and is still trying to find an apartment. We continued to take care of Lola for 2 months until the guardian called again and asked us if he is able to surrender her to the facility. Luckily for him, and me, my partner had fallen in love with Lola and grew up with boxers as a child (her last boxer looked exactly like Lola but was an over sized female) and wanted to add her to our family. Her guardian was ecstatic, less stressed and worried, and allowed me to take her home for a week to see how she did with everyone else (2 cats: male and female). Lola was an instant hit in the house! After having her for that week, I called up her guardian and told him that we could not et her go! He was so happy, but sad to have to give her up. He asked to meet up one last time to so that he and his daughter could say goodbye and give me her papers. Needless to say, Lola never given the chance to say goodbye to her old family because he never called back after many attempts to setup a meeting time and place. We have now had Lola for over 2 years and she has been nothing but a love.
