We were contacted by a provicinal Hound Rescue concerning a Bluetick Coonhound in our City. We had previously hoped to adopt a beautiful old Bloodhound named Tracy, but her age and some medical issues made it impossible to bring her 20+ hours north from southern Ontario.
The Hound Rescue knew we were still looking and thankfully forwarded on info. concerning our girl Keesha. We got a photo and some background on her circumstance, that is how she ended up in a rescue situation. She was removed from a home of a teenage couple who were not caring for her. She was left isolated on a balcony, tied up, unwatered and unfed. Keesh was 15 lbs. underweight when they found her...and those of you who have a Bluetick know they're already beautiful, lean dogs...imagine a girl 15 lbs. underweight! She was placed in a resuce home and this is where we met her.
We went for our first visit and I immediately fell in love with her. She was just perfect! We are uncertain how this purebred ended up in the hands of two kids barely able to support themselves, but we suspect some of her irregularities like one ear slightly larger than the other and one eye a little smaller than the other with a different coloured inner-lid made her an undesirable "show dog." She was left elsewhere and brought into northern Ontario by the parents of one of the teens who had her before we did.
Over a 3-week period we scheduled visits and play dates with Keesha and our 4 yr. old, yellow lab Bailey to ensure they were a good fit. Turns out they were! Both girls get along great, and 2 weeks ago we finally brought her home.
She has fit in completely and it is hard to believe she hasn't been with us her entire life! She was extremely barky, and skittish when we were visiting her at the rescue home. But wow! the difference once we brought her home. She is calm, cool and collected. She has a house full of love and attention all for her, her own bed, her own toys and chews, her own yard. She gets her 6:00 a.m. walk and then her looooong evening walks and weekend forays into the bush... it's all she needed to remedy what we were told was "nuisance" barking, etc, etc. We simply give her love, attention and exercise and she is a completely content girl.
I love our hound, and her howl! What other's deem a "problem" we realize is Keesha just being a dog. If you're a dog lover, and an outdoors person, a person that wants a strong and loyal companion, then you should be looking into adopting a hound...I happen to love our Bluetick, but hounds are all similar in this regard.
