Arrival Story: Chloe was a racing greyhound in Florida. She retired when she was 4 and was flown by the 'Greyhound Friends for Life' organization to the San Francisco Bay Area, where we adopted her. She lived with us in San Francisco and relocated with us to Chicago in 1999.

Bio: We were so fortunate that Chloe had always been the picture of perfect health. In early November 2005 she started limping on her left front leg. After several visits to her vet as well as an oncologist, after x-rays and MRIs and a biopsy, we discovered that she had developed bone cancer in her shoulder. The oncologist estimated that Chloe had only six or eight weeks to live and the most radical treatment, amputation of her leg at the shoulder, would have only extended her life by about six months. We chose to make her as comfortable as we could and fill her final weeks with as much love and dignity as possible. It was so amazing to see how stoic and brave she was. As friends and family called or stopped by to see her, we were so surprised to see how many lives she had touched and how important she was to so many people. We had a wonderful Christmas with her. Chloe made it all so easy for us. On January 10, 2006, Chloe told us that it was time. She never liked going to the vet and we did not want her final moments to be filled with fear. We found a wonderful vet who came to our house and, as we were holding her and telling her how much we loved her, she laid her head in my lap and slipped peacefully away. I miss my girl so much. She taught me so much about life. For anyone who reads this, please remember to love your dog every day. They are all so special!
