Arrival Story: We consider Jacob a Gift sent from God and our former basset, Sebastian, who went to the bridge Feb 20, 2004.
Making the decision to help Sebastian to the bridge was a heartbreaking one. He was 11 1/2 yrs old and suffered from diabetes in the last few months. He perked up for the first 5 weeks on insulin then all things seemed to go down hill. My vet once told me that if I looked at my "son" and asked, are you happy and my heart answered "no" then it was time.
Everyone asked if I was getting another puppy as they couldn't imagine me without a dog. My first response was not now, maybe this summer.
About two weeks after Sebastian's passing, I went to go out in the yard as I waited for my husband to come home. I just started crying - I missed having my side kick, particularly if I had to go out into the yard. My husband came home and asked if I was ready to go get a new car picked out and again, I cried. I explained to him I just wasn't into looking at cars and finally admitted that although it has only been two weeks, I needed to get a puppy to love and make me laugh. A side kick to trail after me.
We called John Tait, the breeder in State College, who we originally got Sebastian from. I explained the lost of Sebastian, our desire for another basset and preferences were male, tri-colored preferred. I said it would be even better if we could have a pup of Sebastian's parents, T.J. and Shirley, but knew that not possible. As it turned out, he only had one tri-colored male and it just happened to share a line with T. J. and Shirley. Sebastian was the great-Uncle of Jacob.
The cost was much more than we paid for Sebastian, but we always felt that Sebastian gave us so much love and laughter, it outweighed the price. After about 10 minutes, we decided we would take a drive to the kennel, look at the puppy and see if our hearts said he was worth the price. As it is, we had him named before we ever arrived.
We fell in love at first sight. He was only 9 days old, so it was hard to think that we had to wait until he was 8 weeks to get him. The time passed with John emailing pictures and us making trips over to see our new "son".
As we drove home the day we picked out Jacob, I told my husband and daughter that it felt like Sebastian hand picked Jacob for us. I keep saying it feels like Sebastian's pawprint is all over this decision.
When we got home, my husband found a package inside our backdoor. It surprised us as we never get deliveries on a Saturday, never get a package set at back door and couldn't think what was arriving. We opened the package and I laughed and cried at the same time. It was the stepping stone I had ordered for Sebastian, with his name and pawprint on it. We weren't expecting it for another 2 weeks. I told my husband I was a little worried about getting a puppy so soon after losing Sebastian and I felt the timing of everything, particulary the arrival of the stepping stone was Sebastian's way of telling me he was ok and he blessed my decision for another puppy by sending us to his grand - nephew.
It is kind of nice as you can see similar traits between the two, but can also tell they are two separate individual's. Jacob has full run of the yard, but is respectful of Sebastian's resting place . I find it peaceful to walk to Sebastian's resting place, with Jacob nipping at my heels. Once we get there, he generally rolls over and allows me to give belly rubs as I tell him stories of his Uncle Sebastian.
Two weeks after picking Jacob out, we did get a car picked out for me - a Subaru Forester, as I told hubby, Sebastian didn't like car rides, but I planned on Jacob liking them . We figured the Subaru was best for a basset to tag along and he loves going for rides.

Bio: I was born Feb 26, 2004 at Tait's Basset Farm in State College, PA.
When I was only about 9 days old, Mom, Dad and one of my sister's Jamie, came to pick me out as their newest son/brother.
They were feeling sad with the recent loss of my Uncle Sebastian.
Mind you, I wasn't too enthused at the time, as the breeder woke me up from my nap. As mentioned above, I don't do mornings.
Mom said the decision was made to have me, before they arrived because I met their specifications for male and tri-color, but the deciding factor was my relationship to Uncle Sebastian. Oh they enjoyed seeing the other puppies and petting the adult ones, but their heart was set on me. Mom held her breath as a couple before her looked me over and said how cute I was. As it is, they were an older couple who just lost their basset as well, and although they thought us puppies cute, they decided to adopt one of the retired bassets due to their own age.
Mom and Jamie came to visit me off and on, but weren't allowed to touch me until the day they could take me home. Mom says I was always sleeping when she came.
The day Mom and Jamie came to pick me up, I was of course sleeping. The breeder has new rules now where you sit through about an hour of "training" on how to care for new puppies, even if you owned a basset before. I was picked for them to demostrate nail clipping and ear cleaning, as I sleep pretty much through it. The one helper told Mom he thought I was going to be a sleeper. My bigger sister at home, Jessie, asked Mom if she bought a "slug" as I slept the entire day at home. As it is, I am a bit shy with new things and strangers, so figured best to sleep rather than face it. I quickly learned that I like those human subjects and I am offended if someone walks by and doesn't take the time to tell me how cute I am and give me a rub, preferably my belly, which I will present the moment you greet me by name.
Mom told me my "job" in life is to be myself and make all laugh. Mom , Dad and the girls all say I am very good at my job. Of course they all say I am even more spoiled than Uncle Sebastian, which they didn't think possible. He really had them trained well and because I am a bit more free with cuddling on the lap and giving kisses, they are sunk and answer to my commands.
I have a nice large yard that is fenced in. Mom makes sure I am outside a few minutes before 3 pm so I can be on hand for my fan club to see me as they come home for school. The little 6 yr old red headed girl that lives across the street is the head of the fan club. LOL- she liked me so well she got her Mom and Dad to get her a puppy. He is a 13 week old golden retriever named Buddy. They bring him across the street to play with me in my yard as they don't have a fenced in one. I am still not too sure what I think of him always wanting to climb all over me.
The other neighbor lost their dog a few months ago and they got a new mix breed puppy that is 4 months old named Ally. Man she is fast. Her Mom and Dad brings her over to play in my yard as well, since we have a fence. Try as hard as I can, I just can't catch her. I took them down to the one corner to meet Hobo. At first I was afraid of him as he was a "Monster Dog" - so big - over 100 lbs and his bark scared me. Mom explained Hobo missed Uncle Sebastian and was just happy to see a new friend to come lie on the other side of the fence. With Mom's help, I got used to him and have fun playing Peekaboo with Hobo. He is too big for Mom to hold onto him and his owner won't bring him into the yard, so we only get to visit through the fence. Mom just laughs when she watches us all together. She told Dad the yard used to be filled with small children and Uncle Sebastian, but now that their isn't any small children running around in the yard, she might as well let me have some friends over.
I am turning into a solid big boy. The vet weighed me the other day ( after I tinkled on his scales) and I weighed in at 60 lbs. The breeder told Mom based on bone structure I should be about 60-65 lbs. The vet only told her I had a little more growing.to do.
I am not sure what Mom is talking about yet, but she keeps saying she can't wait to see what I think of the "snow", whatever that is, but she assures me that Uncle Sebastian had Dad fully trained to make sure a nice big area shovel in the yard to go out to do my business and such as more than 3 inches can be a bit of a problem. Jessie just laughs and says since she moved to Maryland I have to be careful hopping through the snow and landing in a drift like Uncle Sebastian did as she won't be around to rescue me from it.
