A Dog's Life

So it was a long weekend. First, I was left alone for hours on Saturday (a Saturday!). Mom had some weird necklace on that was made out of fake Buckeyes. I think she said something about football. She was in a good mood when she got home, so I guess her team won.

Mom had one of my two-legged cousins with her when she got home. It was the 10 year old (the oldest). She's a good kid and all... but she was all snugged up with Mom on the couch. So instead of being able to snuggle next to her like usual, I had to snug on Mom's lap. She rubbed my tummy until I decided to get down. Okay, maybe that wasn't such a bad thing after all.

Then the next day Mom and my cousin were outside so that the kid could paint some stuff. It was hot. I don't like to be outside when it's hot. But I had to be out there to keep an eye on things and protect Mom. The things I do. The good news is that the neighbor (the one who thinks I'm super cute and always pets me and sweet talks me and tells me how cute and sweet I am) came by. She was talking to Mom so she pet me even longer than usual. Okay, maybe that wasn't such a bad thing either.

Then we took my cousin home. Insert a long-suffering sigh here. See, the kid and her family have... I can't even say it... a... a... puppy. The spastic thing used to at least be smaller than me, so I could just get up on something to get away from it. Now it's a little taller than me (Mom says it has a long way to go cuz it's a Labradoodle) so it's harder to get up and away. She's still not so great on the stairs though so when it gets too unbearable, I can just fly upstairs. As usual, she just would not leave me alone!!! That gets on Mom's nerves, too, so we didn't stay long.

Then today Mom was home again. Something about no work because of a holiday. Now normally I'm all for Mom being around. I don't like when she goes to work and leaves me alone. But. It was a long weekend with not nearly enough napping and this pup is tired! Wish Mom would go to bed, but nooooo. I like to hit the sack early and get a good 12 hours or so a night. But Mom's a night owl so she's still up and is making sounds about actually going outside again (something about "rent"...).

It's such a rough life...

Think how many dogs could be rescued!!!

So Mom put a new button on my page... the one about signing a petition to urge the Obamas to ADOPT a dog... she swears she's not trying to be at all political. (She promised that this is the one place she's not going to get all "politic-y"!) She just thinks it'd be pawsome for such a high-profile family to rescue a pup. All of us pound pups don't normally get that kind of "advertising". Cuz you know that whatever the Obamas do, a bunch of people will follow. Think of all the dogs who could be rescued!!!!

I had to go to the vet a few days ago. I didn't like it. Sure, the people there are nice and they give me treats and pet me and tell me how cute I am... but I still don't like that place. It doesn't exactly smell like home. I made sure to tremble when I was up on that freezing cold table so that they'd pet me even more and maybe even give me an extra treat (and it so worked!! score!!!). The vet gave me some medicine (for allergies) and some medicated shampoo (for a yeast infection on my tummy). So far I don't seem to be anywhere near as itchy as I was before, so I guess it's working. The allergy stuff has steroids in it though and it's making me so hungry!!! And of course, at the same time Mom's cut back my treats because I've gained a few pounds too many. I mean, what do they expect?? I was in that shelter for almost a month, I think I have the right to pack on a few pounds now that I'm out of the shelter and in a real home. But apparently they think I put on a few too many pounds, hence the lack o' treats... like Mom even has room to talk. Geesh.

Well I'm going to go see if I can scam a treat out of Mom anyway... maybe my super-sad eyes look will work.

Possessed

So I was just looking through the pictures of me that Mom has posted here. I look possessed! I have shiny green eyes in most of them. I don't know what's wrong with her... or I suppose it could be the camera.

If anyone actually reads this and has some tips for taking pictures that don't end up with possessed green eyes, let me know and I'll pass them on to Mom. Then I'll get her to post some better pictures of me.

Like the bath wasn't bad enough before...

Mama gave me a bath today. She has a new way to torture me and make bathtime even less fun: she can now tether me in the tub so that I can't try to jump out. To make her feel bad about that -- about the whole bath, really -- I made sure I looked all sad and pitiful. I even threw in some trembling for good measure.

Once she finally let me out, she supposedly dried me off. I don't know why she bothers with that. The running around, shaking, and rubbing myself all over the carpet that I do does a much better dry job than her stupid towels. She did brush me for a little bit and even rubbed and brushed my belly. Of course, she does that a lot anyway.

Putting up with the bath and not struggling or crying -- plus, you know, the sad face and trembling -- scored me a treat. Mama saw an interesting recipe in The Bark that has plain yogurt, peanut butter, and honey in it. She mixed it all up this weekend and put it in ice-cube trays in the freezer (I'm really going to have to figure out how to get into that thing myself...). They are EXcellent and I scored one of those after my bath. The tub o' water was almost worth it... almost.

Oh man. Now she's flipping back and forth between cnn and The Daily Show. *sigh* And I thought the bath (with tethers!!) was enough torture for one day. I don't know why she watches all this political stuff. Surely Scooby Doo is on somewhere. That dog is kind of stupid. But he's funny, what with that goofy laugh and the Scooby Snacks and all.

Mmmmmm, Scooby Snacks.

I think I'm going to go work on getting another treat from Mama before we head for bed...
