Arrival Story:
Okay here is the WHOLE story its a long one! Last summer my neighbor told me that her daughters female yellow Lab had just had a litter of 13 puppies. She had an oops litter with her daughters male chocolate Lab also purebred. I wished I could take a puppy but living with my mom I knew she wouldn't want anouther dog. Fast forward nine weeks and our other neighbors. Bought Sawyer (though at the time his name was Hoss). I saw him on a friday and thought he was a really cute yellow Lab pup. My neighbors then went on a camping trip over the weekend taking their new puppy. That monday night I was sitting in the living room when I heard a puppy crying.........And crying and crying. I looked outside to see that not only was it raining (but hot and muggy July) but the little yellow puppy was chained to their truck bumper with no food or water. I was torn wether I should call the police or not because we have had issues with these neighbors before with how they treated their animals. So I decided I would wait until morning. Before I even headed over there. Neighbor A (the one whose daughter was the breeder) came knocking on my door. When I answered she asked me if I had heard that puppy crying. And I said yes and asked her why the other neighbors would chain him up like that. She told me that on the camping trip they did not feed him food but sausages. And of course that resulted in one sick puppy. So I guess on Sunday when they got home. Neighbor B went over to Neighbor A's place and told her to take the puppy because it was sick and they didn't want it. But neighbor A could not take the puppy. I told Neighbor A not to worry about it. And walked over and untied the puppy from the truck and walked to neighbor B's front door and knocked. Before I could get out a word. Neighbor B thrust the puppies envelop which held his papers. And said "Just take him we were gonna let him run off anyway. He's a chewer, he poops, pee's, and pukes in the house. He's your problem now". In shock I walked away with one very cute, very thin, and very sick Labrador puppy. My mom ended up letting me keep him as she is a sucker for puppy eyes hehe. And I pay alittle extra rent. I spent over $200 in vet bills because of how dehydrated he was and he had two different kinds of worms, was infested with fleas, had a severe ear infection, and a bad case of Giardia. Sawyer has grown into a strong, muscular, beautiful, smart boy. And I hope every time Neighbors B see him they regret how badly they treated him.

Bio:
Sawyer is my clown. He never fails to make me laugh on a daily basis. He does get into trouble don't get me wrong. He has eaten his way out of his crate and has also eaten the base board on the wall. Though he has never been a bad chewer those are just the few things he has ruined. We are also working on manners when it comes to guests and new people in general. Boy is that ever fun! NOT! Lol but over all he is a very good smart boy. He just chooses occasionally to use those brains for evil plotting ;).

So over the winter im not gonna lie, I really slacked on the leash walking with Sawyer. No real excuse other than not wanting to get sick in the cold. I know I know its lame.

So I pretty much knew he would be a terror to walk once it got warmer. Since he wasent all that great as a puppy. And my fears were realized when I started walking a 60+ lb teenager with felt the need to mark every since electric pole and tree close to the sidewalk. While often almost dislocating my arm.

He absolutely would not tolerate the halti. No matter how I tried he just would buck like a wild horse when he felt pressure. So I decided I would get him a good fitting choke collar JUST FOR TRAINING NOT FOR LIFE. And along with corrections with his collar I would use voice corrections that he could learn. The commands being "No Leave It" when he would go to lift his leg. And "Walk easy" when he pulled.

Well its been a month of steady training and guess what? He didn't hardly need any leash corrections today!!!! He followed my voice commands almost PERFECTLY. I was so proud and told him the whole time what a good smart boy he was. Once I feel confident I will try him on his regular collar just for a short walk down the road. And then eventually take him out on our three hourly walks a day with no choke collar at all!

I am so SO glad he is catching on. And yes I plan to stick to this walking routine as he really enjoys it and it helps ALOT with his behavior inside.

Oh and lately he has made serious leaps and bounds with not jumping up on visitors. Or the kids in the neighborhood who love him. He is really becoming an obedient dog :yikes:. Though he was always a great dog .

So so SO PROUD of my boy and had to share this on his journal for all to see!

My Mom Says Im Becoming A Good Neighbor

I have made lots of friends around the city on my daily walks with mom lady and Maggie May. Dogs and humans alike. I especially like one street we walk on that has a group of young children who love to run up and give me lots of pets and kind words.

I will admit at first I was bad and tried to jump on the tiny kids. And a couple even got knocked down. My mom apologized profusely and corrected me. I was just so excited and im still young and learning that I am big and strong.

But the weeks have gone by and yesterday I really impressed my mom lady! We were walking down the kid road when two of them came running over to see me. My mom lady said in a steady voice as they approached "Stay Down" and was prepared to grab my collar. But guess what!!!

She didn't have too! I even sat when the kids got close enough to touch me. I didn't try to jump once!!! My mom lady could have jumped for joy. And today a little boy ran up to me anouther anouther street and I didn't try to jump on him either! He just got lots and lots of kisses.

My mommy says I am slowly but surely learning manners. Though I still think big people are for jumping on. My mom lady doesent allow it. But my grandma and uncle don't make me get down so I think its okay to jump on everyone by my mom lady. Well except for my new break through with the tiny children.

And also yesterday my mom lady noticed something very special about me. Again on one of our walks she stopped at a friends house to talk to them while they were outside. The man is handicapped and has to walk with a cane and his legs are very stiff.

My mom was afraid I would try to jump on him since he was excited to see me and was baby talking me. But I knew he was special. I knew he was hurt in someway. And you know what? I didn't try to jump on him once. I just kissed his hand and got a case of the wiggle butts. My mom was so surprise and happy and very very PROUD of how well I did. She even bragged about to my grandma.

Im glad im becoming a good neighbor. Because I sure love all my neighbors and want them all to love me too.
