Who's a Dog!?!?
Making People HappyAugust 2nd 2007 4:55 pm[ Leave A Comment ] I just wanted to write in my diary how good it feels to hear that I make someone else happy, other than my mom!! Mom and I take a walk every night when she gets home from work. I love our walks because we live in a nice small community where most humans say hello when they walk by. My walks are a lot of fun because humans will stop me and mom on the street and ask to pet me. They will mention to mom that they have seen us walking around town and that they have been wanting to come over and say hi to me because I look so friendly. I love that because I love humans. Usually our evening walks are around our small town green. There is a nice big grassy area with benches, a teeny tiny train station, our local police station, and some little stores. That means there are plenty of people to say hi to. Lately on our walks we have run into a very nice man. He loves to stop and say hello to me. Mom makes sure I sit nicely when I see him because he is disabled. He has trouble walking and has a speech problem. Every day on our walk he comes over to talk to me and pet me and give me kisses. He always has a bag of ice with him so that he can feed the ice to me because he thinks it is too hot out. Mom doesn't even mind that he thinks I'm a girl and calls me Lassie. He is so happy when he sees me, he gives me tons of kisses, pets me quite a bit and talks to me. Well, tonight mom and I were walking our usual route and a policeman came walking over to us and said "Is that Lassie???" and mom remembering that my friend calls me Lassie laughed and said yes, that I was Lassie. Mom explained that I'm really Oliver. The policeman said that he knows all about me because my friend who gives me ice has told everyone he knows about Lassie the dog who stops everyday to give him kisses. The policeman told mom that my friends name is Frank, that he has severe brain damage from a stroke a few years ago. He is only 40 years old. The police man said that everyone knows Frank because he can't work and visits all the stores and the police station to say hello everyday. The policeman wanted to thank mom for letting me stop and say hi to Frank everyday because it has made Frank very happy. Frank went into the police station and told them that he gets kisses from Lassie everyday. The policeman said that Frank grabs a chair and sits on the sidewalk in the afternoon (for about 2 hours) waiting for us to walk by and that he tells everyone he sees that he is waiting for Lassie to come say hello. That made mom feel so wonderful. It's not a huge thing, but she is glad that we have made another person whose life is tough, a little bit happier. Frank can keep calling me Lassie all he wants, I'll still continue giving him kisses. It's nice to know that we have made a bit of a difference to someone.
