Arrival Story: Annalise’s story is a difficult one to read but inspiring in its own way. What we know of it began in October, 2003 when Annalise was pulled from a shelter in Tennessee.
The shelter was being shut down after its director was arrested when many dead animals were found on her property. The dogs and cats in her shelter were not much better off. Local prisoners had been cleaning the shelter, and there were reports that they had assaulted and otherwise harmed the dogs in some very horrible ways. Anna was one of their victims based on a veterinary exam and some of her mannerisms and behaviors. It is not known if Anna had also sustained physical and emotional abuse before coming to the shelter, but it is suspected that she had.
No rescue was able to take her because she was so emotionally scarred, until her first angel, Karen, found one in New Jersey willing to take a chance on this incredibly fearful girl. Some of Anna's behaviors included submissive urination and defecation in reaction to eye contact or any movements around or near her; an inability to walk or even crawl on lead; and a cowering, shaking fear of people, chains, and the dark. In effect, this dog spent every minute of every day living in fear. Karen dealt with it all and Anna was making progress when circumstances beyond her control forced her to find a new foster home for Anna.
As a result, Anna went to back to TN until a more permanent situation could be found for her. One afternoon, she was tied outside alone and slipped her collar. Because of her fear and insecurity, she was on the run for weeks. When she was finally caught, it was found that she had been shot! Of course, she also had lice, ticks and an infection from the gunshot wound. She was vetted, boarded, and BrightStar agreed to give her another chance, and hopefully a bright new start. She is now being fostered in a home with five other dogs who are teaching Anna to enjoy life: she runs, plays, digs up the yard, follows their lead and feels safe with their welcoming ways. She is a dog who refuses to give up and has continued to progress in spite of her fear, growing more confident every day. I am in awe of her.
However, this is not yet a happy ending. When Anna came to NY, her vet immediately found a loud and very unusual heart murmur. She is now going to Cornell University for more tests to determine the cause and treatment of this life-threatening murmur. It is possible that being shot caused the murmur-you can feel some pellets and shrapnel was seen on her x-rays. Anna is going to require tests and treatment ranging in price from $2,300 to $3,000 depending on the type of treatment needed. Aftercare is not included in this amount.

Bio: Anna has had her surgery and has recovered!
BrightStar gave me Annalise for Christmas, so she is now in her forever home!!!! She is laying on the floor sound asleep and has enjoyed a busy day that included a trip to Arby's.
