Arrival Story: I work at a Vet clinic that is also the shelter for our city. Walter was out on foster from the Humane Society in a nearby town. He was not being taken care of in his foster home, and managed to escape and get picked up by animal control here. He was very thin, had severely infected anal glands, could barely walk, but had that Basset tail wagging and making friends none the less.
We contacted the Humane Society to let them know that he was there, and what the situation with his foster was, and they told us it was too inconvenient to come and get him, and they didn't have the funds to pay the impound fees to get him out anyway. We are talking about people that put our clinic down because we have to euthanize so many dogs, because people never come looking for the ones that get picked up. Anyway, having grown up with Bassets in my parents home, I had to take him home. I paid the fees and got the vet care that he needed, and gave him the best Thanksgiving present of his life. We subsequently found out that he had been either hit by a car, or severely beaten in his life as his rib cage on both sides is deformed. He also has very loose knee joints, and shoulder displasia on both sides.

Bio: About 6 months ago, we had a growth removed from his tummy and found out it was malignant. I don't remember what it is called, but it is a cancer that usually starts in the spleen, and then manifests itself as skin tumors. The lab that did the hystopath said he should only have about 6 weeks to live, and that it would definately come back. Since then we have seen no more tumors, and the ultrasound of his abdomen showed no signs of internal tumors either!! HooRay!!
We love this old man almost as much as we love our children and I was devistated by the news.
Long story short he is a very happy guy with very few demands other than food and the privelege of sleeping in my bed with me.
BTW, he is named after that Walter guy ( I can't spell his last name) from Grumpy Old Men...
UPDATE: Walter went to the Rainbow Bridge the middle of June, 2006. We took him to the vet because he got into the trash and got a bone stuck on his teeth. The vet checked him out, and we found out he had a grade 4 heart murmur, and both his kidneys were rock hard and the size of softballs. Since he hadn't been eating or drinking well for a while before this, we decided to let him go while he was still relatively happy, and wasn't suffering. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I know he is better off, but I still miss him. Three months later, I am in tears typing this.
