Arrival Story: Jess (or Jessie) who came home with us on Good Friday 2008. The story is quite amazing really. The previous day I went to the Vet with my friend's dog while she was working, and while we were there I met a woman who had brought in a black long-haired cat who looked very much like my Scamp, apart from only having one eye. We got to talking about dogs, and after telling her about losing Bobby last Easter, she said she has a friend who needs to find a home for her 6 year old lab cross female dog, Jess, due to the breakup of their marriage and having to move into an apartment. Well, I couldn't be more surprised...this is just the kind of meeting I was hoping fate would send my way. She called her friend, and I made arrangements to go up to meet Jess the next day at 10:00 a.m. in Thirsk, which coincidentally is where the real James Herriot (Alf Wight) lived and practiced veterinary medicine!
Jess lived with three kitties, so she is FINE with our five! It is so very strange how things come about...they happen when they are supposed to, I guess, not when we expect them to. I was going to wait until Bobby's 1 year BridgeDay before starting to look for another dog, but if Jess happens to like us and all...better early than never!
My friend and her dog came long with us I up to the Yorkshire Moors, and when Jess's mom brought her out and let her off the lead, she ran right to me! (Well, yeah, I was holding my arms out rather encouragingly!) We took Jess and my friend's dog out to an enclosed field, and let them run loose; Jess managed to assert her dominance over my friend's dog in record time, but they romped a bit and growled a bit and basically got along like two dogs who didn't know each other very well. We got back home just before noon, and after the introductions, which went OK, we decided we would all have a nap. Jess' former owner said she slept on the bed with her if she wanted Jess to, so we invited her up and up she came! The kitties gradually came up and checked out the newest "interloper" and decided she was harmless enough to sleep with. Two kitties slept on Jess's dog bed which came with her, and was at the side of our bed. All the while we napped, I kept waking up and looking at Jess and the kitties, and giving Jess belly rubs, which she loves. I am quite sure that Bobby sent her to us on this Good Friday on purpose!
Now, Jess hasn't done a lot of exercise in her 6 years on this earth, giving her a ...umm...less than flattering figure (kinda like me!), so a regimen of less food and more exercise is definitely in order. We just got back from our first REAL walkies together, and she loved it...walks very well on the leash, loves to smell EVERYTHING. Now comes the feeding part. She has been fed Royal Canin sonething-or-other (I am going to call her former owner to see which one it was) which I have a small supply of, and a quality meat dog food mixed in, the same one Bobby used to eat. I put a small bowl of food down for her, and she happily gobbled it down.
She is now lying on the small dog bed/mat we have by the fireplace, looking rather comfy, even though Scamp just hissed at her when she stuck her muzzle up near his radiator bed. She is obviously VERY used to kitties!
I cannot believe the sequence of events that led Jess here just before Easter Sunday. This is a very special gift. She has the most piercing, light brown eyes I have ever seen. A more relaxed dog I don't think I have ever seen. She is a wonderful addition to our family...thanks Bobby, for sending Jess to us!
