I got a phone call from a friend of mine that does foster care and rescue work. She said she knew of a Peke that was at the vet's office. This was at work in the AM so I made arrangements to go to the vet's office over my lunch hour. (Keep in mind that I said I would not get any Pekingese again after my last one died in my arms.) When I got to the vet's office, I spent about 30 minutes with Kinsey, just her and me in a room. She was so happy with me, I just knew we were meant to be together. Then when it was time for me to go back to work, the lady told me that a Kansas City rescue group was on their way to pick her up and they already had someone approved for her. My heart just sank! As soon as I got back to work, I went online to fill out my application and I e-mailed them a LOT that week. This all happened on a Monday (10/3/05 to be exact). The following Monday was Columbus Day and I happened to be off work. I was on the phone talking to my vet about one of the other dogs when he mentioned he had received a phone call from the rescue group. My heart jumped! Not too long after that call, I received a call from LL Dog Rescue and they asked me if I was still interested in adopting Kinsey. I said, "You still have her?" I thought she was long gone. As soon as they told me I was chosen to adopt her I jumped in the car and drove all the way to Kansas City to pick her up. It turned out that they had TWO Pekes and got the other family to adopt the other Peke, knowing how much I wanted Kinsey. Kinsey was the most pathetic looking thing when I first got her. She had been shaved down and had sores on her from being locked in a crate in her own urine and feces. All I was told about her was that she had a puppy at the young age of 8 months, had been in a constant state of heat ever since, and had been badly mistreated by young kids and a 19-year old that hit her with his fist. After I got her I found out she is missing a toe. I had to give her a bath at least twice a week with special shampoo until she healed and her hair started coming back. Some places took longer than the rest. But she is probably the most beautiful Peke I've ever had. I would never have guessed that when I got her. She is definitely a momma's girl. I don't think anyone ever took the time to teach her anything. I don't think she ever had any toys because she didn't know how to play or do anything. Now she is spoiled rotten (not spoiled, just treated very well) and has all the toys she could ever play with. And she is quite smart and has learned how to sit, shake, sit-up, down, roll over, speak, and even crawl. I will NEVER buy another dog. It will only be rescue dogs for me!
