 Quick Bio:
Likes: Chasing and digging after chipmunks. Herding me out the door, nipping my heels and butt, when time for daily walk. Chipmunks. Me. No, chipmunks, no, me...

Pet-Peeves: When I stay up too late past his bed/tummy rub time. When I blow on his soft silky ear hairs.

Favorite Toy: Goes nuts chasing a radio controlled toy car. Will exhaust himself trying to herd it. Why WON'T it go where I want it to go!!??

Favorite Food: Jerky treats.

Favorite Walk: Anywhere in the woods where chipmunks can be found.

Best Tricks: "Talking" to people and trying to join in on conversations. Keeps growling and barking at me when I stay up past bedtime, the later it gets, the more intensly he growls and barks at me.

Arrival Story: Went to look at some puppies at the Humane Society shelter and was given conflicting statements as to what breed(s) they were. He was the only male in the litter with 7 sisters who were always picking on him. And at the time they were all sleeping but the girls would not allow him to be in the nice warm pile. However he was the only one that woke up and came over to me. So he picked me, I didn't really pick him.
On the way home he kept climbing out of the 20 inch high box although he could only reach halfway up. He somehow applied enough pressure to the sides at the corners and work his way up and out. So I drove all the way home with one hand on the wheel and the other keeping him in the box. He would even start climbing up my arm if I wasn't careful.

Bio: After studying the traits of all the popular dog breeds, the Belgian Sheepdog is the one I always wanted to get. However since purebreds can always get homes, while thousands of mixed breed dogs are abused, abandoned, and killed every day. I therefore am compelled to get my dogs from shelters and save at least a few dog souls in my lifetime.
Although this has some risk as you never know how they’ll turn out, this has worked out quite well as they have all been wonderful dogs. However in this case I’ve been extraordinarily lucky in his turning out to be mostly Belgian Sheepdog! And what a beauty at that!
I find it strange that at the time of this writing there are over 43,000 dogs registered on this Website with only 39 being Belgian Sheepdogs. For these dogs are totally awesome!
Although all my other dogs were treated as equals which resulted in very strong bonds, they all were, to varying degrees, somewhat independent. Most commands were ignored and all would wander off if given the opportunity. But this most extraordinary dog acts like I am his God. He will not leave my side and always stays as close as possible. I can leave the front door open and he will go no further than a few feet outside and lay down. Coming inside periodically to check on my whereabouts. And even when chasing after deer or other wildlife, he will not go very far.
He does everything I ask. Even a cough of sneeze is scrutinized just to make sure I’m not trying to get him to do something. I run a furniture refinishing & repair shop and when I first started to work outside by the back door he wanted to stay nearby, but I told him that I need him to go watch the front door and let me know when someone comes in. He went right in and ever since then he stays by the front door when I work out back and barks whenever a customer shows up. And what really blows me away, is that he has taken it upon himself to bark in a different way whenever the phone rings! Or like the time he was going to jump off a high ledge to get to me so I told him that it was too far and you’ll hurt yourself, you HAVE to go around and find a safe way back. And after a moments thought, he did just that. There isn’t much he can’t understand and does things like this all the time. He’s proof positive that anyone who uses the expression “Dumb animal” should take a good look in the mirror first.
He’s also VERY protective without being overly aggressive. He insists on staying in between me and any person especially other men. But he always tries to size up the situation first to see how much show or actual force is needed to protect me. Like with a landlord’s dog at a place I was renting. They had a Pit Bull, Rottweiler cross which had bitten me once and attacked Lord Evenstar just as the garage door was opening one time. It happened so fast he had no idea what hit him and after they were separated, he was quite shaken. But a few weeks later we were outside and their dog busted right through the fence and came right for ME. Evenstar intercepted his attack with more fury than I’ve ever seen in a dog before. He was NOT going to let that dog get to me. But when the other dog ran off, and the threat was over, Evenstar just let him go. And with other dogs he just tries to herd them away from me or just stay in between us.
He also has lots of character. Like ever since he was a puppy he would start barking back whenever I told him to shut up, the louder I tell him to shut up the louder he barks back. And later on he started “talking to people” and trying to butt in on conversations. (Although he has always “talked” to me by using distinctly different whines, growls, and barks to express different things.) Or taking one of his toys and throwing it in between the couch and wall where he can’t get it. Then start sighing and staring with a forlorn look in his eyes until I get it for him. Then he’s sooo happy because I fetched it for him so he throws it back there and starts all over again. If I’m late for our daily walk he starts groaning and flopping his head down on his rug to show that he’s getting ticked off. Then when I’m ready he intensely barks, nips my heels and butt to herd me out the door. It’s time to go for our walk, NOW! Or when I end up working late he keeps growling or barking at me every few minutes until I go to bed. And there’s more, but I think you get the point.
So that is why I decided to share Lord Evenstar with everyone. He is totally awesome and will spoil me for all my future dogs.
