Arrival Story:
I volunteer with a rescue, and help out alot with the medical side of things since I am a pediatric and reproductions vet tech. I got an email from the rescue regarding a bitch that had been dropped off at a rural county shelter and slotted for immediate euthanasia, because she was heavily pregnant. I said I would foster her. She got to me that evening and 2 days later gave birth to the most wonderful litter of 7 mutt pups you've ever seen. Momma was the best mother ever recorded. She has gone a step further since coming to me in Sept of 07', as soon as her pups were weaned there were two little orphan pit mixes that were very ill after having been rejected by their mother in the baltimore shelter, she nursed them until they were weaned and excepted them as her own, then along the line there have been 4 other new born fosters all of which she would suckle (even if she didn't have milk) clean and cuddle. This girl absolutely melts for a baby puppy. She is perfect with kids, dogs, cats birds, you name it. That is unless one of her babies is cuddled up to her sleeping or she feels Pucky is too close to the whelping box. That is a time when if you aren't me, you do not approach her. She'll give you plenty of warning, but if you don't listen, she will unleash the rath of a mother. Mainly on 110 lbs Pucky who is an elephant in a china shop. Guess what a few run ins with her playing the protective mommy, and he got the point, Dont even sniff the air in the direction of the puppies or she'll get ya.

Usually I wouldn't have taken on the fostering responsibility of a bitch and large litter of pups, but I had just lost my old girl Rogue in a way that didn't really give me time to say good bye, I still mourn Rogue greatly. I took momma almost as a payment to my Rogie Dogies memory, she loved babies so much that I thought it would please her to know that I used her slot in my home to save another momma and her babies that other wise wouldn't have been saved. Momma is so much like Rogue in personality that we are considering adopting her. I have to admit that I deal with some guilt with that decision, but don't think Rogue would mind. The funny thing is that these girls are so very similar but would have hated each other. Each one viaing to be the protector of the babies.
