Gotcha Date: August 26th 1994 Birthday: August 28th 1993 Likes: FOOD! Squirrels, rabbits, lizards, flys. Watching cooking. Pet-Peeves: Waiting for food. Loud noises. Favorite Toy: A treat ball. One with food in it. Favorite Food: Liver. Raw bones but she cannot have those anymore. Favorite Walk: The park! Lots of potential FOOD on the ground, bunny poop too. Best Tricks: Touch my hand. Fetch the toy, any toy. Arrival Story: Just decided I needed a dog to go for walks and hikes. Medium sized, short haired and mellow.............. She was walking on the flimsy plastic chairs at the rescue home and so stressed she didn't know who was at the end of the leash. Oh well, two out of three. Bio: She has been my hiking, back packing and walking buddy for 14 years now. We learned how to do agility together. She taught me how to teach a dog, she is very patient! Now she is 14.5 years old she is getting hard of walking, jumping, hearing and seeing.
This past year has been tough. Sassy has been declining since last November, repeatedly getting little annoying illnesses. Icky poop, UTIs, sight and mobility slowly diminishing. Whenever she was on antibiotics she lost her appetite and her weight was going down.
Last month was the last straw. Her eye got scratched and she nearly completely lost her sight. After a couple days it didn't hurt but she was so upset she stopped enjoying going out for even a short sniffy walk - not even for rabbit poop snacks! Last week I was thinking about calling the vet every day but didn't as she was eating heartily.
Friday afternoon SHE decided enough was enough - even though she still ate three meals. We took her to the vet first thing Saturday and with the tiniest of sighs she let go.
Max misses her and Artie thinks things are too peaceful around here. Even though she has been fading and leaving us bit by bit for nearly a year we miss her too.
She was the best teacher dog ever. I never would have figured out dogs without such a gentle responsive partner. She taught me patience and humility and so much more.
