Likes: Cookies! She is about the most food motivated dog ever!
Pet-Peeves: Collars. They rub on a spot that makes her have to scratch her neck.
Favorite Toy: She likes nylabones and shank bones
Favorite Food: Anything!
Favorite Walk: Petrifying Springs Park
Best Tricks: She can (still) do almost everything required for basic obedience.
Arrival Story: Adrienne was given to me for my birthday in 1997! We got her on the day the Green Bay Packers won the Superbowl so I knew she was going to be a winner! Her registered name is Gemstone's Adrienne
Bio: It had always been my dream to show a dog in obedience so Adrienne and I started right away in puppy classes and after graduating from that we began working with a really good trainer. I also learned a lot from a video on starting your puppy by Anne Marie Silverton. Her techniques are amazing.
So Adrienne started life as my partner and I worked with her every day. She and I grew so close we could pretty much read each other's minds and expressions. She is the best dog I've ever known and I know there will never be another like her. Before we were able to enter our first show I ruptured a disk in my back and I couldn't work with her anymore. I've suffered from back problems ever since and have had back surgery once and need it again in the near future.
If you're wondering about the portrait of her, that is a pencil drawing I drew a few years ago. I haven't had a chance to do portraits of the other dogs!
Nikki & Today: In 2001 I decided that I really wanted to have a daughter from Adrienne. I guess it was from some desire to make sure she lived on. She had three puppies and we kept her daughter Nikki. She was the best Mom ever and all three of her pups were just wonderful!
Now Adrienne is 11 1/2 years old. She has almost all of the maladies that are common to boxers. She's had to have eye surgeries to correct boxer ulcers, she has had many skin tags removed. Her heart though is good and though she has slowed down she is in amazingly good health. I have to give credit for her good health to Foster Smith's Lifestage Select Vitamins. Adrienne has had her back xrayed and her entire spine is almost fused. When she is not on these vitamins she can barely move but two per day keep her active and you would never know that she has arthritis at all! Its like a miracle!!
I'm very concerned about one thing and that is she does have a small mass around one of her nipples and the vet is concerned about it. If it grows she will need a mastectomy and it will be a major surgery. I'm to keep an eye on it for any growth and it is killing me to think she would have to go through that. So please say a prayer that this mass is just another underground benign skin tag like the many others she has had before. She is my girl and I only ever want her to have happy days for the rest of her life.
By the way, I am an animal portrait artist (pencil only) and you might find it fun to check out the other pets I've done portraits of in the past. www.laurajsmith.com
On February 22nd 2009 shortly after coming home from a Rally Run Thru, Adrienne began to bloat. We rushed her to the vet but when they took xrays they revealed the classic torsion of the stomach. Surgery would the the only way to save her but at 12 years old the vet advised against it. It is a very difficult surgery and she would likely have suffered greatly upon recovery. So we tearfully said our goodbyes and held her until her last breath.
Arienne was my heart dog. There will never be another dog like her and I miss her every day.
