Arrival Story: Hershey languished in the kennels at the Nebraska Humane Society for almost a month = he was 10 years old, brandishing a wicked weeping sore on his right front leg (reaction to anesthesia for cyst removed), and just looked defeated. I was brilliantly fortunate to walk him and got to know him over a period of weeks...which convinced me that this was the dog for me!
I'd lost my 13 yo Dalmatian several months earlier and was not certain that I was ready to adopt, but Hershey convinced me otherwise. Memorial Day 2006 I looked for him at the NHS, but he was nowhere to be found. Panicked, I made a few calls and learned that he was being prepared to be shipped to an elkie retirement facility in Montana, courtesy of the remarkable John Nelsen Moosedog Rescue Fund. Hershey was literally just hours away from being transported when I was successful in adopting him.

Bio: **11/30/2009 - Hershey crossed the bridge after a brief but valiant struggle with insulinoma, a malignant tumor of the pancreas. He spent the last night of his life wrapped in the loving embrace of his extended family as we celebrated a belated Thanksgiving. The following morning, he let me know that he just couldn't go on any longer. I'm writing this just two short weeks later and the grief is still fresh and staggering. Hershey was a once in a lifetime dog, a tender soul, a magickal Moosedog who enchanted every human who was fortunate to make his acquaintance.
Hershey's former owner, who stated he had to give him up after ten years because he was moving from a house to an apartment, noted on some NHS paperwork that he is "a tender dog." So true, this dog is a sweet and gentle soul.
I didn't change his name because he'd had it for a decade...my brother observed that he believes Hershey got his name because his eyes are color of melted chocolate.

Forums Motto: Gentleness is quiet strength.
