Arrival Story: Shylee Sweet is what happens when a grieving Big Mama goes to the Humane Association to donate her dogs things. Shylee Sweet, formerly known as Sly, and her sister Smooth were waiting to be adopted. Their brother Slick had found his forever home. We did not want to separate the sisters, but that is why they weren't getting adopted: no one wanted to separate them. The best thing we could do is pick the one we wanted and the other's adoption would follow quickly. We chose the one I could pick up--she weighed 42 lbs at the time--since they had been raised on a chain and were learning to walk on a leash. The lovely caretakers at NHA had her walking on a leash, but she still needed work. She had never walked up steps it seemed because that really bothered her when we got home. Then she wanted to sleep outside and we would have to carry her after the walk.
Granted, now we understand how positive training works, but the forced stuff worked with her and she doesn't seem mentally warped because of it. She loves to sleep at our feet and next to us on the sofa. She has the prettiest almond eyes and most beautiful black hair ever. She was fully grown when we adopted her, so we often would wonder what she looked like as a puppy. If you look at our foster, Raleigh Pete, you will understand why that wondering ceased. He has grown up to look exactly like our Shylee Sweet, minus her white toes!
Shylee Sweet is the reason I was able to keep our Georgie Girl when she was having such a hard time with housetraining. Shylee and Georgie were making out and rolling around and my husband realized he couldn't separate the two of them because they so loved each other. Thank goodness for that one!
Shylee Sweet is always in charge when we leave Camp Chaos 37206. She even will pet the other dogs when Michael asks her who ate the hotdog buns or the entire loaf of bread. Typically, it's Georgie Girl, but that's easy to tell if you look at her huge Homer belly.
Life on a chain isn't the way to live! Look at our Shylee Sweet and you will know that a dog's home is where we hang our hat, not where we plant our garden or throw our trash.
