Arrival Story: I was lonely and he walked right into my heart.

Bio: He was my husband and I's first dog, I got him because my husband was working long hours and I needed a friend. Well did he fill that spot and so much more. Ironically enough shortly after getting him my husband lost his job, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing for Parker because the two of them bonded so deeply. I truly believe that we each lost a piece of ourselves the day he died. Parker went with us pretty much everywhere, he was not the best
behaved dog but that was more of our fault than his. I remember on several occasions saying to my husband how it scared me how much I loved this dog, we would be out running errands and I would miss him terribly as if we had been separated for days. He made me laugh, I loved him more than I have ever loved anything in my life and I couldn't explain why, but it scared me to death because I knew someday I was going to lose him, I just didn't
think it would be so soon. The day he died we were visiting my parents for a long weekend, it was February 19th, 2007, a Monday. We lived several hours away so we wanted to have a quick lunch with my parents to celebrate my mothers birthday which was the following day and then get on the road. They have a large yard and several dogs of their own so we left all of the dogs outside while we went out to eat. I never questioned it but according to my husband and my father they both thought about the gap in the fence but never said anything. We had lunch and then went to a store my mom liked to shop at, we had just left the store when my father's phone rang. It was weird, I knew what had happened before he even got off the phone. He asked my mom (who was driving) to pull over into an empty bank parking lot, he made very vague responses to the person on the other line and his tone of voice changed. He hung the phone up and I just sat there waiting to hear what I already knew. I will never forget his words "Parker was hit
by a car, he's dead", so simple, so matter of fact. I sit here re-telling
the story as tears fall down my face because it still hurts so much. We loved him more than we have ever loved any creature, he showed us what it was like to be loved unconditionally, we miss him terribly. I know if anything is to come of this sad and tragic story it should be this, NEVER assume your dog won't leave your yard, NEVER NEVER NEVER assume you can predict what your dog will or will not do with the right temptations.
