Arrival Story: I got Ben last October (2007) and he was about 10 months old at the time.
My daughter Kayleigh and I had been discussing having a dog for a while and I decided that it was all fine and well us discussing it but not to do it when she was that age was silly.
We went first of all to the SSPCA (Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) in Edinburgh to see what they had, but the only office I could get to easily was an administrative office and they didn't have antying there. The lady on reception was really helpful and called the kennels just outside Edinburgh for me. They only had staffie crosses, and I wasn't that keen. She also gave me the numbers for dog rescue organisations/kennels in Fife so that I could call them when we got home.
I tried them all to no avail. by this time my daughter was getting a little upset because I'd told her we'd find the right dog and we seemed to be getting nowhere. Langside Kennels in Kennoway was the last number I tried (after double checking the number because it appeared to be the wrong one, lol). When I called the lady on the other end of the phone was wonderful and told me that yes, they did have a dog that was suitable for a family, didn't seem to mind other dogs (ahem!) and was a medium size (double ahem!). The only doubt I had was when she said he was a German Shepherd cross as I'd had a bad experience as a child with a German Shepherd. We agreed to go and see him the next day.
The next day, me, my daughter and my dad piled into my dad's car for the journey to Kennoway (about 1/2 hour away) and all the way we were discussing what we thought he'd look like, what his nature would be, etc. Nothing could have prepared us for him.
He was in a kennel between a whippet and a great big fluffy white German Shepherd that was baring its teeth at everyone and everything going past - I hoped that he'd not turn out like that. He was sitting at the door waiting to see us and when he was taken out it was as if someone had given him speed! He ran all around us in the dog run, jumping up on us, licking our faces, etc. The kennel maid explained that they'd not walked him yet that day and that was why he was hyper. it also appeared as though he knew we were going to take him home. I fell in love with his face as soon as we saw him. When she told me his name was Benji it was is if it was a sign from above - I had had a cocker spaniel when I was a child that I loved very much called Benji.
He knocked my daughter over and proceeded to lick her all over her face from top to bottom, all the while she giggled like mad. My dad was a bit unsure as he thought I wouldn't be able to handle him, but I persisted. We made an agreement with the kennels that if we didn't get on they'd take him back to find him another home and we left.
Within a mile of the kennels he had calmed right down and was lying next to me on the back seat of the car. He rarely gets that excited now, apart from when my daughter comes home from school.
When we got to my dad's I went on the internet to look into the GSD breed, as I wanted some further info about them. I was astonished to see that they were almost exactly how they described his nature (something I still can't believe). He is loyal, affectionate, clever, funny all at once (if you know what I mean). He hasn't been hard to train and loves a challenge.
He loves to go for a walk with his "girlfriend" a tiny springer spaniel who lives across the road. My friend Ruth, who owns her and I laugh that they're like an old married couple, especially when they're running down the path each holding one end of a stick.
