Arrival Story:
We purchased Lucy and her sister / litter mate Ethel from a breeder in Pennsylvania. Actually, it was more along the lines of a "puppy mill," but we didn't know until we got there. Apart from the hefty fee, it felt more like we were rescuing our puppies at the time. It turns out that our purchasing these puppies did, indeed, constitute a rescue. Less than 24 hours after bringing them home, Ethel nearly died from pneumonia. She was in an isolated oxygen room and heavily medicated for her first week as a member of our family :(. It cost us thousands of dollars to save her life. There is permanent scarring on her lungs. Lucy suffers from severe allergies. Again, a family without the means would have probably dumped her because managing her allergies has necessitated costly visits to a veterinarian who specializes in severe allergy and skin conditions. Having said all of this. We have the best little dogs in the world! They are sweet, love people, and highly intelligent (albeit mischievous). But we couldn't imagine our lives without them.
