Likes: Go for rides, go for walks

Pet-Peeves: Stopping during our rides or walks. She starts grunting and whinning, "Let's go, let's go!" Hates getting her toenails clipped. During sessions we go through wrestling, yoga and kung fu positions, along with lots of grunting, whinning and growling.

Favorite Toy: She has a big box full of toys. Every time she comes in she goes to the box and pulls out all of her toys until she finds the "toy of the day." But her favorite is her very first toy, a stuffed, furry, gray snake.

Favorite Food: Ice cream. When she hears the ice cream carton being opened, she plants herself in the middle of the room to make sure we notice she's waiting for HER portion.

Favorite Walk: She likes to go down the road with me (we live in the country), but she also likes to go around the block so she can bark and run along the fenceline at the neighbor's dogs. They bark and yap at her and she says, "Come on, I'll take you all on!"

Best Tricks: We howl together.

Arrival Story: When our first Airedale, Sheba, went to the Rainbow Bridge suddenly, we called her breeder. She said she would have a litter in the fall and would call us. We got the call in December to come and choose a puppy. B'Elanna had 19 littermates! They were all running around us and they all looked alike so it was hard to pick out any one individual. I picked up one of the larger (and curlier) pups. While holding her I was running my hand through her curly fur when my fingers found what I thought was matted fur around her neck so I tried to loosen the mat and surprisingly found that it was a string tied around her neck. I showed the breeder and she said that the previous week, a family had come to pick out a puppy and they picked her, but they couldn't take her yet, so the breeder tied a string around the pup's neck so they would know which one they chose. When they came back they checked all the pups and couldn't find the string so they took what they thought was the pup they had chosen. Lucky for the pup I found the string because in another two weeks it would have started to tighten into her neck. So, we chose the pup with the string!

Bio: B'Elanna plays with her buddy, Apollo, our housecat. Athena, Apollo's twin sister, doesn't play with dogs, but they do nose touchies. B'Elanna is a great "big sister" to our young collie, Amber. When Amber first arrived, B'Elanna adored her; the next two days, she hated her (getting a lot attention, playing with all her toys), but now they play together. B'Elanna took care of Amber when she was a puppy. She coaxed Amber outside to do her duty and waited for her to come back in. Because the puppy was taking all of B'Elanna's toys, I put two of B'Elanna's favorites (a stuffed, gray snake and a floppy pink rabbit) out of reach of the puppy. And I watched an act of pure unselfishness as B'Elanna pulled out her gray snake and gave it to the puppy. B'Elanna "talks" alot, a series of growls, grumbles and short barks. To anyone else it sounds like she's about to tear me apart, but it's just her way of talking. She is very sensitive and if we correct Amber, B'Elanna takes it personal--her ears and tail go down and she walks away as if she has been scolded. We have to let her know it's OK, then we get into a barking contest where she always has to have the last word.
