Bittersweet Memories

He was here
Such a short time
Loving him
Should have been a crime

As the days drew on
And the nights got colder
I would sit in that chair
Puppy head on my shoulder

That sick little pup
Hard for him stand
Barely able to hold his head up
Only wanting the touch of my hand

Over two weeks
He slowly got better
Attention he'd seek
On the floor we'd play together

Genetics are a game of chance
One we could not win
Before we knew it
He was sick again

This time
He would not live
No more playing
No more puppy kisses to give

Always in my heart
And his special place
No more painful nights
Will he have to face

Not a single memory
Will erase
And never could another
Come and take his place
