My Tail of Devotion for Kaiser

Star Date 29.10.2003

5 years ago today, my life changed forever.

The day started out as any other... and at that time, everyday was the same as the one before. It had been 2 months since I had come home from Toronto and 2 months after I had left the most painful experience of my life. You see, I had just left a very abusive relationship and was struggling to get my life back in order. But the emotional scars just ran so deep. I just wanted the pain to end. My family tried, but I don't think they really understood the extent of what I had just been through and I certainly wasn't in any position to tell them. So I quietly suffered alone. At night, I would cry myself to sleep and pray. All I had was prayer, but the pain continued and I simply thought, God has forgotten me.

I didn't feel worthy of love and didn't think I had any love to give. This man had taken everything from me and made me feel so worthless, I thought I was better off dead. Oh please just make the pain go away... please just end my suffering.

I had no place to go except home and going home at 29 made me feel even worse. I had always been independent and admitting I needed my parents at 29 made me feel like even more of a failure. I couldn't run away, I had no money or resources to leave with. I just had a dream of building a business so I focused on that. But starting a business with nothing and already an emotional wreck was all the more trying. I got by a little with the few bucks I brought in here and there... but I knew it would be a LONG time before the business even showed the slightest profit. So I had lots of time to think which at that point, was dangerous.

It was around noon that day that my Dad came into the house where my sister and I were making coffee. He was visibly shaken up as he had almost hit a puppy a couple miles from home. He had stopped to see where this puppy had come from. My parents live in a rural area, so there is nothing around but road and forest. Where this puppy was found, there was no houses within a mile of each side. In the forest, he found a mother and a bunch of pups. The mother was a mess. She was skinny with sagging spent breasts, tangled hair and missing half her tail. When my Dad went to pet her, she crounched in terror like she was expecting my Dad was going to lay a beating on her. My Dad estimated the pups to be around 6-8 weeks looked like they had been very recently weaned. My Dad is a farmer so he can tell when an animal has just finished breastfeeding.

So we decided that my Dad had to go back and get Mother and babes and keep them here where they would be safe and fed. Just as we were talking, my Dad's buddy pulls in. He's a police officer and usually stops in for a coffee on his way by. We told him about the pups so Dad jumps into the cruiser and they both go back to look for the Mom and pups. When they came back, all they had were two pups with them. Kaiser and a white one that we named Chucky. Chucky later became Max at his furever home. They said they looked everywhere and the Mom and other pups were nowhere to be found. We found out later, someone else had come upon the family and loaded the Mother and the other pups into his truck and took them to the vet clinic where they stayed until they were adopted. But they missed 2 pups!!!! Kaiser and his brother must have been frantically searching for their Mom because they were running around on the road when my Dad got back there.

Now I will admit that before that day, I wasn't much of a dog person. I liked dogs I knew, but was scared of any others. I was a cat person. But those 2 little munchkins totally melted my heart. I cried the day that Chucky left. I wanted to keep them both, but knew I couldn't. My family wasn't emotionally ready yet to get another dog, they were still mourning the loss of their cocker spaniel. But I continued to see Chucky regularly until his family moved away.

As much as I loved that other little dog.. it was Kaiser that was destined to be mine. He was so scrappy - both physically and personality. I didn't know the first thing about dogs. But Kaiser was the dominant one over his brother. I think that's why the other family chose Chucky. Kaiser would bite, he would walk all over the bed at night while his brother would settle down and want to sleep, pee wherever he pleased. He wouldn't stay inside the wash basin while his brother sat silently and seemed to love to be bathed. Chucky was the obvious choice for a family with 3 children.

But nothing changes the way this little boy looked at me the day he came into my life. He was so skinny.. he looked like a bobblehead. He was dirty and smelly, but he had a smile that just lit up a room. We would be outside and he'd come racing up to me with a big sunshiney face and proceeded to pee at my feet. I just wanted to pick him up and swing him around in a big hug and kiss his little face. Oh he was so adorable!!!!

I still remember when he jumped out of the police cruiser. We had a couple stray cats that my Dad would feed. After those pups jumped out of the cruiser, all we saw was a big orange blur go running into the garage. BOL!!! My sister actually kinda started not liking Kaiser because he was scaring the cats away. When she would go out to feed them, Kaiser would follow and want to eat the food. So my sister started feeding them up on the retaining wall flowerbed outside the house. I will never forget the time when Kaiser was just getting big enough that his little paws could reach the top of the flowerbed and grab a few kitty kibbles. My sister would say to me "Your dog gives me rage!!!" BOL!!!

Now it's 5 years later and we have been through so much. We've moved twice. The business took off so I was able to find a location where we could live in and I could run my business out of. Business got so good, we were able to buy a house. We've added 2 more furries to our family. Maggie in 2005 and Sam in 2006. I had Rascal my kitty already when Kaiser came. Hindsight, Rascal was trying to comfort me when I was going through my bad time, but I was being too selfish to notice it at the time.

My animals have been my rock and no matter what happens in my life and how low I sometimes feel, I know they love me and are depending on me. They give my life a purpose. Kaiser has grown into such a wonderful and handsome boy. He is so affectionate and smart. He makes me laugh and brings comfort to me when I am sad. He looks out for his furblings and the home. He has such a wonderful personality. He also has such wonderful manners when out in public and I am always getting compliments on what a good boy he is. He loves everyone.. other dogs, kids, kitties, people. I couldn't ask for a better dog. He is just so wonderful and he has been so good for his sister. Maggie has learned so much from him and in turn, has become such a great dog herself.

5 years ago, we may have saved him, but he really saved me.

Please keep your babes safe this Halloween!

I'm looking forward to Halloween!! I hope you are too!! Unfortunately (for me), I have to spend it behind a babygate in the living room. I can still see the kids, but I can't go up to them or (what Mom is truly afraid of) out the door!!! Mom doesn't do it to be mean.. she is just making sure I am safe. Some kids do come in and give me some pets and kisses so it's not so bad! But BOY OH BOY.. would I ever love to spend the night running around the neighbourhood with all the kids! But it's just not safe. My kitty sister Rascal does not like any kind of fuss... especially where kids are concerned.. so we won't see her all night! BOL!! That's for sure. You can guarantee she will be upstairs in Mom's bedroom where it's safe!! Maggie and Sam.. well.. they will be having fun too.. but since they are black animals.. Mom wants to be extra careful because there are mean people out there that might want to hurt us simply because it's Halloween and we are just the type for easy pickings cause we are just too friendly even to strangers.

We hope you enjoy Halloween and have lots of fun.. but most importantly.. please stay safe!!!

Here's some links Mom found for a safe and Happy Halloween for pups!

Will Halloween be Scary for Your Dog?
There are many dogs who love Halloween as much as their owners. They like to dress up in costumes, parade around and socialize. For other dogs, Halloween is a frightening, confusing nightmare of which they want no part. As much as you want your dog to be part of the fun, make sure she’s a happy, willing participant, and keep her safety in mind.

Pet parades, where dogs march down the street in adorable costumes, is great fun for everyone, especially dogs who like to be the center of attention and have no problem adorning clothing.

If you put your dog in a costume, make sure it doesn’t restrict the movement of your dog’s head, legs or tail. And for your sake and your dog’s, make sure your dog is able to go potty in it! If your dog is bewildered or frightened in a costume, it’s really not kind to insist that she wear it, no matter how cute she is in it. Most dogs have no problem with a simple bandana or anything worn around their necks, as they are used to wearing a collar. Things that go over the back may be a little more unfamiliar to them, and things on their heads could be upsetting. So if your dog’s not into the costume thing, try a creative bandana or decorated collar.

Trick-or-treaters at the door are a thrill for many dogs, and a trauma to others. Dogs that feel compelled to protect you may find it very disturbing to have an endless stream of strangers show up at your door wearing costumes. Any dog can get excited and run out the door or jump on children. Keep your dog in a crate or closed in a bedroom if he’s having trouble seeing the joy in the trick-or-treating ritual. Even if he's ok with everything, you may want to keep him on a leash inside just to be safe. If you have people over, ask everyone to help watch your dog, just to make sure he doesn’t get too friendly with the trick-or-treaters or slip outside. Getting out of the house might mean access to bags of candy, small children, and passing cars.

If you want your dog to have treats for Halloween, it’s best to buy him doggie treats. He should not have candy, and definitely not chocolate, which is toxic to dogs. Since dogs are opportunistic eaters, watch the goodies and candy bags – your dog is likely to find them and scarf them down, wrappers and all. That could mean a mess and an upset stomach, or even worse, a trip to the veterinarian.

The important thing to keep in mind this Halloween is, what’s fun for you may not be so fun for your dog. Make sure she’s safe and happy, too.

DogAge Tip of the Week

Spook-Free Halloween

For most dogs, Halloween is more frightening than fun.
Here are a few tricks to make the evening safer and less
spooky for your pup:

* Keep your pet in a separate room away from the front
door if the ringing doorbell makes him anxious.

* Keep decorations and jack-o'-lanterns out of paw's

* Keep him away from the candy basket. Most sweets make
dogs sick -- plus, raisins and chocolate can be fatal.

* Pick up any stray candy wrappers, which can be a
choking hazard.

* Think twice about suiting up your dog; most pets find
costuming uncomfortable and stressful. If you decide to
dress him up, make sure the getup does not interfere
with his movements or ability to see, and that it does
not contain any small pieces that could be swallowed

My buddies Bronco and Onyx tagged me! Thanks guys!!!

It's the latest game on Dogster called "You are LOVED!". Here's how it goes: Pick 3 dogsters who you think are just fantastic and tell a little about why you feel that they are so pawsome! Be sure to tell them how much they are loved with a p-mail or a rosette! Since I was tagged twice.. here are my 6 choices!

It was incredibly hard just to pick 6!!!!!

Zoey - Zoey is the sweetest little girl. We made friends right away because she is just so nice. I always get a rosette at the beginning of every month always with a very special and personal message. We just love her and her Mommy so much. They are so kind hearted and supportive.
Dakota - Whar can I say! I love Dakota with all my heart! Ever since I saw her little fuzzy face pop on the forums, we've been the greatest pals! She is so smart and silly. We enjoy her so much. Plus she makes me feel like a stud muffin so that can only be a good thing! BOL!!!
Vincent - Vincent is such a dear friend. I feel like he is my long lost brother! We are so much alike and our Mom's are always sharing stories and they have the greatest conversations about us. He is so wise and always helping pups out in the forums. They are a wonderful family and very dear to us. We don't know what we would do without them. They are our rock!
Chaz - Chaz is and always will be my very best friend. He doesn't post much in the forums and I really miss that.. but I know he is always a pmail away and always in our thoughts. He was my first friend when we started posting on the forums and he is the most special guy in the world. I wish we could play together in real life!
Joey - What isn't there to love about our freckly face sweetie. Joey always puts a smile on our faces. He is so sweet and helpful to all pups. He is everybody's pal and we love seeing him.
Mingus - Mingus is a hoot! OMD! We LOVE this guy! He is so funny and friendly. Mom loves to look at his pictures because he has that twinkle in his eye that makes you wonder.. what is he going to do next! He is also so helpful to all pups and has all kinds of advice. We just love this guy!

So tag away and spread the love!

Mommy is crying so hard today and she keeps whispering to herself "wake up wake up wake up"

But it's not a dream (more like a nightmare)....

Dutchess is really gone.

We can't believe it! We can't understand it!

She was only going to get spayed! SPAYED!!!! Maggie is spayed, Rosie is spayed, Ruby is spayed, Lady is spayed... EVERY DOG WE KNOW IS SPAYED!!!!

Why did this have to happen? This family has been through enough! They are one of the kindness and sweetest packs on Dogster! Why did she have to go! She was still just a little girl!

Sweet beautiful Dutchess.. we will love you forever and always. We know Joy is taking good care of you and that you will both take care of your Mommy.

This is one of the saddest days we've ever had on Dogster.

Dutchess 3/2/04-3/13/07

Don't worry.. it's nothing serious! Just my wellness checkup.

But I heard Mom talking to my Aunt about BLOOD! They are going to take my BLOOD! What does that mean? How are they going to do that? I've never bled a day in my life! I seen Mom cut her finger with a knife before.

OMD! Are they going to cut me with a knife! Are they going to bite me?

What in Dog's name is going on!?

Mommy is my most favourite person and my dogtor is sooo nice! I'm all worried now! Maybe I can call Grandpa to come save me!
