Arrival Story:
My sister had just lost her long-time fur-kid and I was doing a little research as to which breed might work for her. She lives with our Mom so the breed needed to be small, low activity level, not need professional grooming and basically just love everyone. Well, as you can tell the Cavalier meets all these criteria. My sister was the one that looked at breeders. Although both my sister and I have always gotten rescue dogs or bought a dog from someone needing to sell it for some reason, there are virtually no small dogs in our shelters and what few there are go quickly. I fell in love with the breed also, and although I have a senior dog, Phoebe (a black miniature cocker), I fell in love with the pups, also. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel goes back many hundred years, in England when King Charles fell in love with them and brought them into the castle to be lap dogs rather than working dogs. They've only been in the states for a few decades and recognized by the AKC since late 50's or early 60's. Gracie may not be AKC but she is a "top dog" to us. The breed does tend to have a couple of health issues (heart murmur and knee problems) but responsible breeders have already made progress in these areas.

Bio:
Gracie got her name from my mother-in-law. She never had dogs in the house (grew up on a farm in the plains of Canada) but she was won over by our other dog, Phoebe! Although my mother-in-law passed away last year, we remember her always saying she'd like to come back as a dog because they have it so well. When I reminded her of the terrible early years of Phoebe, before she became a part of the family, my MIL said, "Well, I want to be a dog in YOUR family."
