Arrival Story: About a month after arriving in Ashgabat, in the middle of a delegation visit, I was on my way to a party on a Friday night and the cutest little white short-haired dog with the biggest eyes started to follow me. I admired the animal and sadly left it behind, saying, I can't take you home. Over the next few days I saw this dog often and as they say, you can't control love. One evening I came home with a friend, and we went to find this dog that I'd been speaking so highly of. The dog came right over to me and let me put it in my lap. I didn't let my friend's observation that the dog, which I finally observed to be a girl, looked like an alien deter me, for I saw the potential. Two days later, even though I was exhausted and feeling unprepared to become a doggy-mommy for the first time, a colleague drove me to one of the few local pet stores for some food, a collar and leash, and some soap. Over the next hour and a half as I looked for Archabil, named after our street where we now live together and where I found her, "Archie" for short, I was afraid that she'd run away to a different neighborhood or been killed by then, but the 20 neighborhood children who I'd asked to help me find Archie finally saw her, and they let me know by yelling "we found her!" and chasing her through the streets. I motioned to them to stay back and let her run ahead, then called the name I'd given her, and she tentatively but joyously ran to me. After some coaxing, I think that she can now see the benefits of living indoors.

Bio: Archie seems to be an Italian greyhound-terrier mix, likes sleeping on the stuffed floor pillows I bought in Turkey years ago, and has all of her shots from Dr. Guvanch, the best veterinarian in Turkmenistan. With proper nutrition and care, a beautiful tan color showed up on the ridge of her back and her ears which wasn't visible because of undernourishment and stress, I suppose. She loves her trainer Yuliya, who has taught her practically everything she needs to join the circus: sit, lay down, shake hands, sit (like a rabbit), come, place, dance, jump over a barrier, climb up the stairs on playground equipment and back down again, heel, run, and toilet (outside), all on command. She would love Dr. Guvanch, but I think that she still remembers the shots and getting spayed and isn't ready to forgive him completely yet. Basically, Archie likes anyone who likes her and will let you know it with her best lick on your face when you're least expecting it!
