I had just left a rainbow gathering in New Mexico and we had to stop at Wal*Mart to pick up some parts for the car. Outside there was a woman and her two kids with a cardboard box of puppies. These children have a future in marketing; they were running up to people, and putting the adorable balls of fluff right in their arms before saying "you want a puppy, don't you?"
So my friends were in the store getting car-parts and here I was sitting on the sidewalk with a puppy on my lap. I had wanted a dog for some time, but I had recently been ill and didn't know if I'd have the energy to keep up with one. I decided to smoke a cigarette and think on it, but I couldn't reach into my pocket to get a lighter, what with the sleeping ball of cuteness on my lap.
I asked a passer-by for a light, and they handed me a book of Camel matches. At the time, these matchbooks came with "fortunes" inside as part of a marketing campaign. The lady with the dogs says to me "So, are you going to keep her?" and I open the matchbook... which says "you'll regret saying no."
Far be it from me to ignore an omen like that.
