Arrival Story:
I stopped in a local vet clinic to pick up dogfood for the other 2 kids at home one day, and sitting regally behind the counter was this gorgeous black as night dog. Wagging, smiling, and waiting. I immediately called for him to come to me and he walked confidently toward the swinging door, pushed it open and came and sat at my feet looking up at me with amber eyes, the pinkest tongue I had ever seen and a smile. The 1st thing I said was " you need to come and live with ME!" His owner was the receptionist and she said"oh, no, he's my baby" to which I responded with how he reminded me so much of Jake, the beautiful Golden Retriever/Setter that had just passed away. She understood, but held her thoughts. I loved on Buster, the beautiful flat coated retriever who had not moved from in front of me. She then said, "you know, I am in an apartment and I feel so guilty because he has to stay in a kennel 9 hours a day, has no yard and has to come to work with me every day. She then said, "actually, I was thinking about maybe finding him a better home" to which I retorted with glee " We have 4 acres, a pool, 1/4 acre fenced doggie yard and a year old Golden Retriever puppy who DESPARATELY needs a playmate. She didn't say anything else, so I left her with my business card and told her that I understood how hard it would be to let him go, but that if she should decide to, he would be welcome. She said that she would know in about 6 weeks. 6 months went by and I had given up. I knew in my heart that Buster had connected with me and I wanted him to have the life of Riley, but after all, he WAS NOT my dog. But then one Saturday, my phone rang and it was Buster's owner. She asked if the offer was still good. I said "of course" and he was at our house within an hour. He 1st ran over to me and sat, again, at my feet and looked up at me with those intelligent amber eyes and then ran to meet Berklee, the horribly behaved, but darling, golden yearling. They didn't growl, a hair didn't even bristle, but they immediately began kissing thru the fence. I let Berk out and Buster began to run with him. Buster's owner stood in disbelief as Buster watched Berklee leap into the pool. Buster walked around and then FELL in and swam up to the steps and got out, turned around, walked back down the steps and glided into the water like a swan. The aqua water parted around his oh so black coat, and it was done. He had found a new home where he could be a dog. Berklee found a new friend and we were blessed to add him to our Canine paradise. His gentle nature even attracted, "the diva" of the pack, Hannah the 11 year old dachshaund. She gave him the same flirtatious look that she gave the late, very royal and regal, Jake, so we were sure that it was a great fit. It's now been a year and Buster has taken possession of Hannah's bed and taught Berklee some manners. We love him ever so much and look forward to many, many happy years with him as part of our family.
