Demand Justice for Hoochie & Raley

On May 19, 2008, witnesses watched in horror as Christopher Comins shot two pet dogs multiple times in Orlando, Florida. Comins allegedly only ceased firing at the Siberian huskies, Hoochie and Raley, when their guardian came to their aid and screamed at the gunman to stop.

Though four bullets struck Raley, and Hoochie lost an eye after being hit with three bullets, both dogs survived. “The dogs tried to run away,” said a bystander who witnessed the incident. “But the shooter wouldn’t give up. He just continued to shoot the dogs.”

Comins said he was protecting himself from wolves he thought were trying to kill a newborn calf nearby.
A videotape of the shooting taken by an Irish tourist was posted on YouTube, leading the Orange County Sheriff's Office to charge Comins with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty. The State Attorney’s Office, however, will undertake its own investigation and may, at their discretion, upgrade the charges to a felony.

Scott Heiser, director of ALDF’s Criminal Justice Program, has offered the State Attorney’s Office in Orange County a host of pro bono services, including legal research, drafting jury instructions and locating expert witnesses to ensure a just result in the criminal case. Heiser also directed the State Attorney to specific authority in Florida supporting felony charges for the conduct captured on the videotape. He also assisted Jennifer Dietz, the attorney representing the dogs and their guardian, Christopher Butler, in a civil suit filed against Comins. Though the suit was settled out of court, criminal charges have yet to be resolved, and at the moment, the criminal case only alleges misdemeanor offenses.

“It takes a movement of dedicated people—like ALDF, animal rights organizations and animal lawyers to push the envelope – to show that societal norms must be incorporated into the law,” says Dietz. “Animals are not mere property. They are sentient beings and need to be treated as such.” Dietz says there’s been a gradual shift in how the public views animals. “I believe that as society has grown to respect the love and companionship of domesticated animals within their household, and even call them members of the family, we are seeing an increase in the judges’ and jurors’ perspective on this issue as well. Juries are awarding emotional distress damages and, in some cases, punitive damages.”

Heiser shares the same view, but in this specific case he’s also worried that “If the articulated concerns about the political environment in this jurisdiction are true, I can see the defense using the civil settlement as a justification for low-balling the criminal case, and that’s an unacceptable outcome. The rich and the politically connected shouldn’t be allowed to buy their way out of a criminal case by paying a large civil settlement and then waving the settlement agreement under the nose of the State’s Attorney with an eye toward cutting a ‘generous’ deal on the criminal case.”

Please contact State Attorney Lawson Lamar and urge him to pursue felony charges against Comins and push for the maximum penalty upon conviction, with sentencing orders on each injured dog to be served consecutively.

To bad there isn't a way for us dogs to sue a human for slander...Christopher Commons is making us Huskies out to be blood thirsty rabid monsters...which if you ask me he is the blood thirsty rabid monster...GRRRRR

He is now suing Chris Butler (Hoochie & Raley's Dad) for slander...and look at his blogs...all a bunch of hearsay...nobody wants to admit to what the video shows!! Thats all the evidence that is needed...I posted a few responses on the blogs and go figure...the owner deletes everything negative for Commons.

Why Dogs Don't Live As Long As Humans - From 6 yr old

Mom got this thru email and thought it was sweet and I wanted to share it with you.

Dog's Purpose (from a 6-year-old).

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker 's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The Six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'

Live simply.

Love generously.

Care deeply.

Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention an d let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Be loyal.

Never pretend to be something you're not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!

There will be a peaceful rally Tuesday, September 23rd at 10am at 415 North Orange Avenue Orlando, Florida 32801in Downtown Orlando for the 2 husky dogs that were shot in Orlando back on May 19th. Hoochie and Raley were shot by Christopher Comins in a field occupied by some cattle after escaping from their owner. Although they posed no threat to the cows, Comins repeatedly shot the dogs in the eye, back, and legs, even as the owner was retrieving them. It was then found that Comins has a criminal record including misuse of a firearm from 2005 when he put a gun to a boy's head. In that case, he was initially charged with a felony but then pled the charge down to a misdemeanor. We do not want to see him also get away with shooting animals.

Many of us have been involved in this case since the beginning, advocating for the dogs and seeking justice from our authorities. Initially, Orange County Sheriff was not going to pursue a criminal investigation for the shooting of the dogs. They felt Comins was within his rights even though he did not own the land or the cattle. However, after calls by concerned citizens, the case was re-opened. When the Sheriff's Office concluded their investigation, they felt that Comins should only be charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty for the 7th (final) shot. This case has been sent to the Orange County State Attorney's Office. The State Attorney ultimately decides what charges should be formally filed, if any.

We are holding this rally to show the State Attorney that we want FELONY animal cruelty charges brought against the shooter, Christopher Comins, for repeatedly and intentionally shooting Hoochie and Raley. We will be in a grassy area near the courthouse/state attorney's office, which is in downtown Orlando at 415 North Orange Avenue, Orlando, Florida 32801. Just look for people with signs!

Rally Guidelines:
Same as usual. Please keep this peaceful...no cursing, screaming, etc
Signs must be hand-held in Orlando. This means you cannot have a sign
that has a pole attached. In the past, the city has received
complaints from people that protesters threatened them with the
poles/sticks/etc that were supporting the sign. I suggest just a foam
board or a sheet of poster board, which you can buy at Wal-Mart. Your
"hand-held" sign can be as large as you want according to code
enforcement.
Please do not block any of the walkways, doors, etc. Additionally, if
an officer tells you to move away from an area, you must do so.
Please do not argue with the officer. If you think you are being
unlawfully asked to move, the proper time to address that issue is
after the fact by filling an official complaint.
Carpools:
We are arranging carpools to make getting to the rally easier. If you
want to carpool or if you can offer a ride, please email me as soon
as possible so we can make arrangements!
****See the video of the husky shooting at:

If you have any questions, please let me know. I look forward to seeing
many of you at the rally!!
