Arrival Story: Persy was a street dog in Puerto Rico (a sato) who was hit by a car and then carried to a veterinarian by a young boy. Persy had a broken pelvis, broken hips, and a broken leg (scar visible in some pictures). His back is also curved due to being malnourished during his early development. We read his story on Petfinder.org and wanted to give a loving home to this sweet-looking special needs dog. We are happy to say that he got through his medical challenges and overcame his anxieties over the first six months of living with us, and he blossomed into the content, friendly dog that everyone knows and loves! During that transition period, Persy was afraid that someone would steal his kibble, so he would grab a mouthful and then run and hide to eat it. We eased him in by praising him when he took the kibble and reassuring him that it was All for him, no one would take it from him. He was obviously not an alpha male on the streets, and it is sad to think of stronger dogs taking his food from him :( But now, he has all the best organic dog foods served to him with all the love in the world.

Bio: Persy used to cower and hide under the bench in the waiting room at the vet's office. His breakthrough moment was when two enormous Newfoundlands walked in... Persy gathered himself up and slowly approached them, reaching his nose up up to them. They welcomed him in a very gentle and friendly way, and ever since then Persy has been the local welcome wagon greeting dogs of all shapes and sizes! Persy is still afraid of most men, but he knows immediately whether the person is an animal lover or not. He's a very perceptive dog, not only when he stares into the woods in the pitch darkness but also--and especially--when he meets people. Persy has a powerful sense of intuition which complements his keen intelligence. He is not the most obedient, but he never does anything wrong. Persy's favorite place to be is between two family members with a paw on each one. He loves to cuddle any time of the day. And, although many street dogs can (understandably) be food aggressive, this boy will interrupt chewing on his bone in order to kiss his family members.
