Arrival Story: She picked us out. I was checking out dogs from a lot of different shelters but didn't see one that I knew should come home with me. I went to New York to visit my parents and they thought it would be nice to visit the North Shore Animal League in Port Washington (Long Island). She was sitting in the back of a cage, high up, just watching me as I walked by. No barking, just these very big ears (sticking straight up like radar) and longing eyes staring at me. I walked back and forth in front of the cage and she just kept following me with those eyes and ears. I walked up to the bars and she tried to lick my hand. When the animal keeper brought her into the room for me to meet her, she sat on my lap and just kept trying to lick my face, kind of jumping from the left side of me to the right and back to get a better angle. She ignored all the other people and dogs in the room and I knew I had to take her home - she was it. She was very timid and underfed (she was a rescue from Tennessee and the underfed part had nothing to do with the NY shelter) but I loved her very much. When I got her home, she jumped into my boyfriends arms. She instantly became a member of the family.

Bio: It took a long time (about a year) for Rosie to learn to not be afraid of the world, but with good training and a lot of love and patience she came around. I introduced her to everything, saying "what's that" and then touching the object that scared her. We went everywhere together and she is no longer afraid of the world. It's actually quite amazing. Then one day, while we were going for a walk, Rosie laid down and wouldn't budge. She is very obedient and it was very strange that she didn't move. Just then my heart started beating rapidly and I became short on breath. I sat with her and as I did she jumped into my lap and laid down. We waited until my panic attack stopped and then she got up and looked at me like she was ready to walk again. From then on she was able to give me signals as to when my panic attacks were going to come on, so I could pull over my car or take a break from what I was doing. I trained her to do other things to help me overcome my anxiety, and then she passed her certification tests and is now a service dog. Now she's allowed to come with me everywhere and my life is a lot better. And to think that it all happened because we both happened to be in New York at the same time.
