Her blanket, her kitten and belly rubs. She's a lazy girl.
Her brother Hobbes.
Not much of a toy dog really. She likes sucking her blanket.
Bread! This dog is a carb addict. She'll choose bread or muffin over meat.
Anywhere where she can sniff alot.
Being the laziest, mellowest dog ever.
I aquired Deva while working at an animal shelter in the West.
Deva had been tied to a tree and beaten brutally by her previous owners. She still bears scars from being abused and fought with other dogs.
She had been kicked so hard/beaten with a pipe that she had literally split open and on top of that she had skin infections, parasites, a foot abscess and her collar had grown into her neck. She was pitifully skinny and we think she was bred because there were DEAD PUPPIES all over the place.
These people (idiot "gangtas") went to jail on drug charges, and she was schedualled for euthanasia due to severe fear-based, territorial and protective aggression.
She had attacked and seriously injured one canine services officer and had to be handled using pressure hoses, padding, catch poles and tranquillizers.
I saw something in her eyes though and I begged for her euthanasia to be postponed just one month.
I offered her meat and she just attacked the bars, so I just sat with her after work. Sometimes for hours.
I threw in a blanket and she gathered it under herself as if she were desperate for something soft.
I brought in a mini radio and played her CBC and although she wasn't interested in meat or cookies she was interested in my muffin so I gave it to her.
Then I saw her tail wag just a little. So I kept bringing her muffins and although she bit me very badly on the arm (still have puncture scars), she was making enough progress to allow me another month, and then another.
I worked Deva for 5 months and finally, she totally trusted me and I knew I had to take her.
She can never be around strange dogs because due to her fighting days, she will kill them without so much as a growl,
and she is very wary of young gangbanger/rapper style men.
She's great with cats, kids, Hobbes and people now.
She's totally calm, affectionate, even-tempered and mellow now!
She's a blanket-sucking bed dog and I wouldn't change a thing.
She has come a long way.
We don't know how old she is, but she'll be with us till the day she dies!
Excuse me, Deva...but could you just TRY to be a little more affectionate? Just a little bit? I don't think your quite, right smack on my lap gazing into my eyes enough at the moment.
Can ya get just a little bit closer?
Seriously. Deva is the most affectionate dog on earth.
Deva is a total survivor and a total inspiration!
I lie belly up in the sun now.
