Arrival Story:
I recently had to have my 10 year old dog, Sydney, put to sleep. She had a tumor on her heart and her liver and kidneys were failing and it got to the point where none of the treatments were working. When she got sick, I tried to convince myself that it might be nice not to have to get up 20 minutes early to walk the dog, and to not have to rush home after work to take care of the dog. It was nice for about 4 days, but then I couldn't stand not having a fuzzy critter around the house. So I started looking for a new pup. A few weeks later, after making a pile of phone calls to various shelters and rescues, I found Kody.

I got Kody from a woman who runs a dog rescue. She's been raising dogs since she was 11, and she and her husband train police dogs. So far, she has had to rescue three litters born to the same two dogs because the owner of the dogs hasn't bothered to get them fixed. Before this woman started rescuing them, the owner of the dogs would just kill the puppies. I adopted Kody on 09/09/04, when she was 8 weeks old. She was the second to last pup to be adopted. She was the quietest but not the smallest. She's part German Shepherd, part Siberian Husky. And we're not too sure what's going on with those floppy ears. Some people are saying that I got her too soon, but all I know is that it felt like the right thing. I haven't forgotten Sydney. I'll never forget Sydney. Syd was my first dog, and she'll always have a special place in my heart. But Kody is a great pup, and having something to love helps. Growing up Kodiak

A home of our own

We moved into the new house back in June. Kodiak would like everyone to know that she's enjoying finally having a real home and not having to move every 3-6 months. I happen to agree. The new house is coming along nicely, and Kodiak likes having stairs to run up and down.

Kodiak was not amused by Halloween, because it meant lots of kids coming to the door and she was stuck in the livingroom not able to jump on any of them. I've been trying to make it up to her with pieces of peanutbutter candy.

Sprained ankle and a bath

I sprained my ankle last week, but Kodiak would like everyone to know that it wasn't her fault. And she's right. I'm clumsy and tripped over my own feet, and even though I could have blamed it on her, and no one would have known, I didn't. I didn't blame it on the snow and ice, either, because there wasn't any on the sidewalk when I tripped.

Kodiak has a vet appointment tomorrow for her second lyme vaccine. She doesn't know this, of course, so if anyone talks to her between now and then, don't mention it.

Because we had so much fun in puppy obedience classes, we decided to go ahead and start basic obedience. Well, ok, I decided, but Kodiak is ok with it. There's a little jack russell terrier in the class that she likes to play with. They work well together. They have about the same energy level (ie: too much), and he's smaller than she is, so she's not afraid of him.

The bottom two pics are new. They were taken just after her most recent bath, but she doesn't look nearly as clean and fluffy in the pics as she does in person.

2 pounds a week

I found two ticks on Kody during the 5 days I was home for Thanksgiving, so we took a trip to her Maryland vet to get a new flea/tick preventative because Revolution wasn't working well enough. She is now on Frontline Plus and will start a new heartworm med next week. Since we were already there, I put Kody on the scale just to satisfy my own curiousity and sure enough, she's right at 40 pounds. She's averaging about 2 pounds a week, silly thing, growing like a weed :-)

I finally got my Low Cost Spay certificate from The Spayed Club. The appointment is Dec 14 and I'm already nervous. I know it's routine surgery, but she's my baby, you know?
