He doesn't like when people reach at his head. His original "owners" were cruel and hit him (we believe) on the head.
Favorite Toy:
He loves his tug-of-war toys, and there's a daisy that makes a crinkle noise that he just loves.
Favorite Food:
Bananas and peppermint. His tail wags when he sees a banana. I'm serious.
Favorite Walk:
Any walk is his favorite! But he also like to lounge on the deck in the summer.
Best Tricks:
He gives high fives. :)
Arrival Story:
Arthur was abandoned as a very young pup and hit by a car. A kindhearted person rescued him from the road and took him to the ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in Manhattan. They spent about three months on rehab for poor Arthur, and finally he was ready to be adopted... but he was a puppy who'd been abused and abandoned and seriously injured, and he'd spent a lot of time in a crate. He needed a lot of work, and in NYC, where big dogs are generally undesirable, no one would take Arthur home. We met Arthur on March 16th, 2001. I sat on the floor and he somersaulted onto my lap, head first. I was in love.
We left him there that night to talk it over, and when we went back the next day, planned to take a few more minutes to look around... though we both loved Arthur (my husband had already fallen for him online at PetFinder.com, before we met him in person). When we said we thought we wanted to adopt Arthur, the volunteers were so happy they didn't let us see any other dogs. They all loved Arthur and so badly wanted to see him find a good home.
It took work, but Arthur is extremely bright and eager to please, and he learned fast. Within a year he no longer needed to be crated when we left him alone... and he's very good at following verbal commands and hand signals. He understands a freakish amount of English...
He's the light of our life.
Bio:
Arthur LOVES the car. He gets very excited, and it's the one time it can be hard to get him to listen... once he's in the car, he's fine, but the process of getting him harnessed and into his seatbelt can be a slow one at times. He hates being left, and has been traumatized by the vet, between his car accident and multiple surgeries to remove benign (thankfully!) tumors. The poor dog has lost a toe, his lymph nodes and part of his tail... is it any wonder he gets anxious at the vet?
