Arrival Story:
We went to the mall to buy my husband some shirts on his birthday (4th of July). We heard barking & he said, lets go look at the puppies first. This was not a pet store and not a not for profit rescue -- I believe some of the local vets have set up this location for rescue adoption, but you do have to pay to adopt, & it is in a mall . We always look at the puppies just for fun, never to adopt one. Little Joe was all by himself in front, he was the last of a litter, & the runt. He had a little ball so I started playing fetch with him. He was just so happy to bring it back again & again. He was just 3 mos. old and 10 lbs. The staff thought we were seriously looking for a puppy, so they asked me to a larger area to pick him up and play with him. Meanwhile, my husband has been distracted on his cellphone with birthday calls from family members. When he came back to get me he says, "Well, if we're going to adopt him, we better do it now, its getting late!" The absolute LAST thing we needed to be doing was adopting a puppy in July, because my husband would be undergoing a kidney transplant in August, and I was his donor! Everything worked out fabulously, & Joe is now nearly 2 years old. The clincher turned out to be when we found out the staff had named him Joe (also my husband's name!)

Bio:
We had Joe's DNA analysis done & discovered he is Labrador and German Short Haired Pointer I am planning on having Joe certified as a therapy dog. From the time we got him at 3 mos, he has gone with me to a nursing home to visit. He intuitively knows who likes dogs, will sit gently with them, even lay his head on their lap and they talk about the days when they used to have a dog until they had to go into the nursing home. He is not bothered by wheelchairs or walkers or canes or crutches. This boy has a calling, and I need to make him official.

We recently found out that Joe has hip dysplasia. The vet felt that since he is young, not heavy (50 lbs), and not in any sports like agility that we could opt not to have surgery. He is currently on an NSAID and a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement. I recently discovered a vet in the area who did a chiropractic adjustment AND acupuncture on him! It made a world of difference. Our goal is to prevent arthritis for as long as possible.
