Arrival Story:
Basil's litter was introduced to me by an acquaintence. She seemed to be from a backyard type breeder and I am glad my friends and I were able to adopt three of the four puppies. They were living in unfavorable conditions--matted coat, parents looked dirty, bad food (IAMS and hotdogs), with many dogs in this household (5 adult dogs). All were kept in the garage. To me, she was more of a rescue, or would have ended up at a rescue if I didn't adopt her first! She was my favorite of the litter of 4. Basil was the smallest amongst her 3 brothers, the most timid and shy, and slept in my arms. I took her home the first day and she was scared, shivering, and very needy. She had tapeworm and fleas, so I slept with her on the couch for 2 days before we were able to see the vet. During the first 2 weeks, she followed me everywhere and waited at my feet, at every moment.

Basil is not the shy, timid puppy I thought she is! She quickly became comfortable in her surroundings. She's the funniest and most observant little puppy--always flat on her tummy, rolling her eyes back and forth, catching every detail until she's ready to pounce! She's quite active and able to hold her ground when playing with her two brothers, Baxter (biological quadruplet brother) and Bailey (2 y/o beagle mix). She's great around all dogs of any shape or size and has recently befriended a full grown lab and 70 pound German Shepard. She's definitely the observant type, calmest in obedience class, and now has become very protective. She's always on the lookout for new noises, protects me from knocks at the front door, and becomes super alert when strangers come near.

Basil Turned One!

Just a quick update that Basil turned 1 on Oct. 15th. She had a blast!! We held a joint party with her brother, Baxter, complete with a doggie play area, obstacle course, and doggie-related food. About 30 hotdogs and 20 bottles of "Flying Dog Ale" later, humans were tired, and so were the dozen dogs. It was a great way to celebrate, but I don't think we'll do it again next year!! It's a lot of work to corral 13 dogs and 30 humans!

This weekend was Basil's first weekend at the beach! We went to our favorite one in Santa Cruz--Natural Bridges. Sand was a bit weird to walk on, but Basil loved it and pounced at each little sand mound. She raced up and down the sandy hills and loved it more than grass! The water was freezing, as usual, but Basil loved it quickly. She didn't realize that waves come up and was soaked halfway....after that, she learned her lesson and backed off when each wave came up. She tried the water and quickly learned it was not good. Thank goodness because that would have gotten her in trouble! Natural Bridges has a small rock edge area to hike on and she proved her climbing skills! Up and down the rocks without any hesitation or help. The day ended with a sunset watch over a cliff, which she daringly peered over without fear. We must do this more often!

I lost my puppy!

I regretfully took Basil in for her first haircut to look like a typical schnauzer. She now has a near-schnauzer cut (the legs are not trimmed because she was getting too stressed for her first groom) and within one hour, I've completely lost my little puppy. She is no longer the wiggly teddy bear with a round face, and her body is not as fluffly. Too quickly did she grow up and I really regret it! I understand it grows back, but by the time it does, she won't be a small puppy size anymore!!! Granted she's cute and super soft, but I miss my the old Basil. :(
