Epilogue: Nala left this world on the night of February 26, 2008, cradled in the arms of her moms.
The next night, during Chi Nei Tsang meditation practice at the Gentle Spirit, Nala appeared to toss me a tennis ball. Tail wagging, smiling, and ever persistent, she continued to retrieve it and drop it back at my feet. Although my heart still felt heavy with grief, she persisted (in the after-life just as in life) and proceeded to bring out red ball and play with it in our yard. I wanted so much to leave my sorrow behind, yet felt somehow rooted in place as on observer--till the scene shifted to our old home, and watching her charge after balls and Frisbees and the red ball through the enormous expanse of our backyard, full of puppy energy, I was drawn into the game.
Later, sitting on the back deck together in the evening twilight, as she smiled and happily panted, and then moving into the living room, I began slowly to feel more at peace, especially when she snuggled up to me and gave me a little Nala kiss. It was as if that kiss was what I needed, to finally know that not only was she happy, but that she loved me still. As if to underscore her delight, she jumped off the old sofa, and there was Molly, her best friend in the whole dog world, back to play. Tails wagging, rolling around on the deep blue carpet, lying on their backs to tease one another with playful growling sounds, they tussled with one another without a care in the world. Thank you, sweet angels, for lifting the veil between our worlds, and giving me a glimpse of your divine happiness and love.
