Leave a bone for Milford

Nicknames: Milford Cubicle

Quick Bio:
Likes: Any attention, eating food very, very fast, stealing leftovers

Pet-Peeves: loneliness, the bottom of the food bowl, having his front paws tickled.. they're just SO sensitive!!!

Favorite Toy: his pal, Archie, rawhide chew toys, Daddy's socks, anything he can steal...especially nail files

Favorite Food: cheese dip with bacon

Favorite Walk: Milford loves his doggie door and loves to run ontop of the back of the couch

Best Tricks: three way tug of war with Archie and Stella, learning to wait for his food til he is told "Okay!"

Arrival Story: Milford lives in Gainesville, FL with me. Milford was a "free to good home" doggie in the paper, living way, way out in the country. (Doggies should never be 'free to good home, 'cause bad people can use them for bad things, like baiting fighting dogs.)
His old owners said his Daddy was a Poodle and his Mama was a 'big-old-red-pointy-eared-dawg'.
He is my first poodle rescue dog... he was full of worms and fleas and had never been to the vet at almost a year old. He was crated and ignored by the people who bred him, then adopted by people who didn't have any time or money for him, but wanted him to be happy, so that 's where we came in.
We had planned toget him healthy, fixed, crate-trained, microchipped, and teach him basic commands, then place him in an appropriate home, but he got settled in, then I fell in love, so he is now a permanent member of the family. I think I was fooling myself from the beginning.

Bio: Milford was so attention starved that he is happy even to get in trouble. His tail never stops wagging. He is sweet with everyone and everything. He enjoys leisurely grooming the cats. He is learning basic commands and is terribly eager to please. He watches you like a hawk! He is very sturdy and loosey-goosey. When you pick him up he goes limp all over-except the tail which never stops thumping.
It blows me away how forgiving this little guy's been, and how quickly he is learning to trust. He never knew that he deserved love and affection. He only knew how to give it, and never expected anything in return. It is beautiful to watch it dawn on him that he is worthy of love. "Sweet" is the perfect word to describe this little soul.

Milford officially became ours this weekend. He was mauled by two very neglected very large mean dogs. I will not name a breed. Some people just shouldn't be allowed to keep dogs. Anyway, I somehow managed to pull the dogs off of him so he could escape. He ran off in terror and hid from me. He usually comes with bouyant enthusiasm when I call. He was in shock. We are fortunate to live in a college town with a vet school, so we raced him over there and had a doctor with him in about 15 minutes. They shaved his little head. His hair was just starting to look real cool and shaggy and grown out for winter. He has punctures all over his face, head and neck. I shaved down the rest of his torso. He's pretty beat up. I know we got off really lucky, but he's still a little mess. The shock lasted a few hours...I think he can't remember the attack. He is a heavy, feet twitching dreamer, and he hasn't had any bad crying dreams...so maybe he will be free from traumatic memories.
The attacking dogs were taken to the pound yesterday. One is obviously very ill with heart worms so bad that they rasp against his lungs when he breathes. The other had no shelter from the Florida sun. Hopefully they will be shown mercy and not returned to their neglectful owner.
Milford's new haircut looks like something out of Dr Seuss. He shivers in the cold, so is now wearing a sweatshirt and is rather toasty. Poor little funny bald puppy! We are so blessed to have him in our lives.
