Arrival Story: Cookie, formerly my mother's dog, actually lives in Virginia, with my sister. My mother has moved to a nursing home, so we're all trying to help ensure that Cookie remains comfortable and well-tended in her senior years.

Bio: Cookie was a terrible little monster for the first few years my mother had her. Over more than a decade, she mellowed and became one of the sweetest, most sensible, and gentle old gals. You would never believe that Cookie, who has just gotten a big thumbs up on general health from her vet, was the dreadful little brat she was years ago. She loves and is very interested in anyone who lets her hang out at their feet, or who doesn't mind having her as a couch companion. Although she's developing cataracts and is mostly deaf, she's amazingly alert and curious. She always checks to see where others are in relation to her.
August 15, 2009 --
This morning, Cookie's family took her to the vet to be peacefully and quietly put to sleep. She had been in our lives -- amazingly -- from 1988 through 2009. In the end, after a lifetime of mostly being loved and catered to, she had begun to slow down in that way that suggests that her quality of life would never be better than it was at any moment. It was very hard for all of us. For my sister and me, like losing a sibling. For my mother, like losing a child. The great thing about Cookie, tho, is that she was with us for so long, and had become such a personality, that we will never forget her, and will probably compare any new companions in our lives to the lovely role model she had become.
