Arrival Story: I had something written here for years but it disappeared today when I updated his birthday... so I'm writing again...Petey was purchased by a family for a man who had cancer to give him something to live for. Well at 6 mos. the man went to hospice to die and Petey went to the Rescue Shelter. He slowly lost his mind in the shelter with all the noise and commotion. He was running from visitors, pooping and peeing in his kennel and then laying in it... after about 5 mos in the shelter, he was not a very adoptable boy. That shelter contacted St. Bernard Rescue and said they had a dog that came in with great potential and just needed someplace quiet. So we fostered him. It took 3 days for him to emerge from his kennel on his own. I had to drag him out each time for his 'business.' I contacted rescue, worried that he would never come out. She gave me tips and pointers and of course, Hagrid was demanding a playmate. Petey eventually emerged a nose at a time. He would come out and go back each time getting a little closer to me as I did the dishes. As this bond developed, it became obvious he was not going to 'go' and live anywhere else. I became Petey's 'moma duck' and he's never very far from my site... if he can help it. He's been with us for 5 years and he's a different dog. He not only lets people pet him, he also seeks it. He's still afraid of loud noises so thunderstorms and fireworks are difficult for the entire family. One day I hope to help him shed that fear too.
