 Quick Bio:
 Birthday: December 8th 2006
Likes: The company of other dogs and her toys

Pet-Peeves: Loud noises, young children (they're just too loud for her)

Favorite Toy: EVERY toy! She pulls all of them out of the "toy box" and likes to collect them. She'll fall asleep on top of the toy pile!

Favorite Food: She loves her dog food. We don't feed any table scraps in this house.

Arrival Story: In November, she was found along a country road in OH, with three littermates. It is suspected that they were puppies that someone didn't sell, so they dumped them in the country (VERY common practice, unfortunately). She was taken into foster care, spayed, vaccinated, etc.
Nutmeg was adopted through GSP Rescue, and placed with a family near me. Her new family loved her, but she just wasn't the right dog for them. The wife was used to small, toy dogs, and felt Nutmeg was a bit too big for her, although Nutmeg is very petite for a GSP. I offered to foster her, and she came to us in early December.
Nutmeg is a very petite (about 32 lb) GSP, estimated to be a year old. She is an absolute doll. Nutmeg never lived in a home, so she is
fearful of strange noises or sudden movements. I wouldn't exactly label her as
skittish, as she is eager to trust and bond with people. She just needs a little
time to come up and sniff on her own schedule. Once she trusts you, you can
expect tons of affection and cuddling on the couch. She is a total love bug.
Nutmeg will need a patient family, willing to begin rewards-based
training with her ASAP. Obedience training will help build her confidence and
she will definitely respond to positive reinforcement. A quiet home without
young children would be ideal for her. She loves the company of other dogs, and
has gladly accepted the five other dogs in her foster home. She actually seems
to need another dog around to follow and show her the ropes. When the other dogs
are comfortable, it seems to ease her fears. She lived as part of a pack of four
prior to entering rescue, so it makes sense that she would enjoy having another
dog around. When cuddling on the couch, her head is either on a human lap or
draped over another dog. She simply loves being close.
Nutmeg did have what is called a "petite mal" seizure a few days after
her arrival in her foster home. Her blood work was totally normal, so the vet
feels it may never happen again. However, if it does, she could start on daily
medication to keep things under control. But, there's a chance she may never
have another seizure in her lifetime. She bounced back like a trooper and by the
next day was bouncing around the house and romping in the yard.
Nutmeg is not known with cats, although she has not shown a strong prey
drive in her current foster home. However, a home without cats would probably be
best, given we are unsure about her behavior. Or, a breed experienced home,
willing to work through any cat/dog issues would be fine also. She is up-to-date
on vaccines and has been spayed. She is doing well on housebreaking and has only
had a few small accidents.
When she starts getting comfortable and makes progress, it fills your
heart with such joy. Nutmeg is simply a delicate, sweet little girl and you just
want to hold onto her and show her the ways of the world. Whomever adopts this
special little lady will be rewarded one thousand fold with her loyalty, love
and affection.
