One of my newest pup pal (also a terrier) brought this story back to me.
What was my Mom thinkin' when she brought home two baby rats?! Had she lost her mind? Hadn't she seen Gangs of New York? (An extremely violent movie I must say but there is a very interesting scene where they put a terrier in a room and dump a bag full o'rats on the ground and then bet on how many the dog eats.) Did she not remember the two snake friends I wanted to bring into the house? Let's not forget my run in with Bo the Bearded Dragon. (Sadly I have to admit, Bo won this fight. She even got away with a tuft of my hair. I thought she would be an easy conquest after the taming of the snakes. Of course, I could have won had Mom not intervened.)
I go absolutley bonkers licking the cage. Helen the rat died last year but Pumpkin is still going strong and FAT, FAT, FAT! She will even stand up against the grates of her cage, with her little beady rat eyes closed in complete nirvana, as I lick, lick, lick her thru the grates. Her and Mom think I'm giving kisses but I really would love to get just one little nibble in. I mean what other terrier could blame me?!

Casey was about 2 years old when we brought Lucy Lou home. So, without saying too much, they have both spent a good part of their lives together. (Which, by the way, Casey is my 6 year old son.) It's a funny thing, the bond between a boy and his dog. Sometimes it's just down right odd!
We have all become strangely accustomed to a bizarre ritual in our home-Casey laying on the livingroom floor while Lucy licks his entire back, legs, and feet. I have to admit it is a bit weird and makes for interesting conversation when friends come over who, I'm sure, think it's very strange. She has been doing this for so long that it literally would lull him to sleep. Very much the same way my middle son would suck his thumb when he was ready for a nap.
So, in closing,
I tell most of my friends that Casey is probablly very salty. But in my heart of hearts I really believe that Lucy thinks Casey belongs to her, and in a world ofsnakes and snails and puppy dog tails, he does.
