Arrival Story:
My first girl, Hilka had just passed. My partner wanted a St. Bernard so we contacted rescue. He wanted a puppy and I kept telling him we didn't want a puppy... We passed all the rescue hurdles and were deemed eligible to foster or adopt. They didn't have any dogs in the pipeline and said it could be up to 6 mos. before we'd have a dog. I was fine with this because I was still really grieving Hilka. Well about a week later a very exuberant, 9 mos old pup came into rescue. They told us he was 145 lbs. He arrived at 85 lbs, severely malnourished and still very much a puppy. He loved to run (Did I mention he was a St. Bernard?) We nursed him back and as the pickiest eater I've ever encountered was very difficult to train. He was not food oriented ...at all! Keeping his weight up was very difficult considering his extreme activity level. He tended to be sickly and had pneumonia 3 times in one year. That's when I began to research raw food diet. He's been on Raw food for 3 years and is healthy and loves food now... Lucky for his brothers and sister, Hagrid needs his raw food or they'd still be on kibble.

When he slayed me: I was having trouble bonding with Hagrid. He was so not familiar and comfortable like my old girl had been. He was also very much an untrained puppy. We had a trainer come over because he was driving us crazy! Puppy!!! She had him sitting and being quiet within 2 min of entering the house. Her training advice, "Don't reward the behavior you don't want." So one day, I'm trying to take a nap. I'm laying on the couch and he wants to play. He's being super cute. I want him to learn to recognize a nap and respect that time. He begins to 'entice' me with his various toys. I'm keeping my eyes closed and pretending to sleep. He's picking toys out of his bin one my one and laying them in a row on the couch by me. At one point he picks a toy out of the bin and tosses it in the air and catches it as if to say, "she's gonna love this one." and brings it over. I fell in love, but I didn't give in and play with him. He's been my sweet baby ever since.
