Arrival Story: I belong to ESRA an English Springer Rescue after losing my Hunter in September 2003. I already had Jesse and wasn't prepared to take another dog at that point, my heart was still healing. So I joined ESRA in honor of my Hunt-man. While one of our members was searching the internet for springers they came across Buck (at that time named Lucky) listed as a Springer/Lab mix in a high kill shelter in northern Ohio. The information we got was that he was a 'runner'. His family worked all day and let him out the back door when they got home in the evenings... the backyard wasn't fenced! So Black Dog would take off and roam the neighborhood. Well... DUH!! We found out that his PTS (put to sleep) date was the very next Monday and this was Thursday, we found out that he was five years old, un-neutered, great with kids, a gentle giant. After a quick consult with my husband, who said that if we let this beautiful boy be put down we'd never forgive ourselves, we put the wheels in motion to get him. One of the ESRA members in northern Ohio and her husband pulled him from the shelter for us and had him vetted. My 6 year old daughter and I met Pat and her husband in Columbus that Sunday to pick him up. It was absolute love at first sight and we've never looked back. We just can't fathom how a family had this wonderful boy for five years and then gave him up. I tell him every day at least once a day that he'll never have to leave us, that's he's here to stay. And I swear he smiles at me. :)
