Zira was a rescue from a family that had too many Danes. They stayed indoors much of the time so she didn't have much experience going on walks.

Best Tricks:
Zira couldn't do much more than sit!

Arrival Story:
We were hunting for a Great Dane puppy and came across an ad for an adult Dane. Sad situation, I believe the owners needed money, they had several adult Danes and were selling them one at a time. Zira's original name was Goldie and but she took to "Zira" right away. She had already had a litter of puppies so our first step was to do the responsible thing by getting her spayed. But a routine checkup determined she was positive for heartworm (the previous owner could not "afford" heartworm preventative). She first had the grueling heartworm treatment and then when the treatment was complete we made arrangements to have her spayed. Zira's spay surgery was taking place during the massive power outage in the Great Lakes area in August 2003. We brought her home to recover and she collapsed that evening. She spent 3 days of touch and go at the animal hospital with numerous blood transfusions, plasma, etc. It seemed that she had an unidentifiable blod clotting disorder. Or perhaps it was complications from the heartworm. Anyway, our family was allowed to come to visit her at the vet, we were asked to bring her favorite Pikachu and raspberry oatbran muffin. After climbing into my husbands lap for a snuggle and a "please take me home" look (all 140 lbs of her), she collapsed and died right there in front of me, my husband and my two boys. We only had her for less than 3 months and her death left a hole in our hearts forever.

Zira was truly an angel on earth, I have never met a dog like her.
