Living With Humans, by Sara

Requiem for Max

Max the pitbull is dead. It really wasn't his fault, at least not the way I see it. He's a dog. Dogs are known to bite, particularly if they aren't properly socialized. I also don't know if he was neutered, but he should have been.

Max made news because he bit two people. A court in Alameda, California determined he was a danger to society and ordered his destruction. Just hours before his scheduled execution, his people busted in and busted him out.

Max was ultimately tracked to Reno, confiscated, and ultimately returned to Alameda where he was euthanized.

If Max's people do get another dog, I hope they take the steps necessary to train and socialize it. Over the years, I've had Huskies, Akitas, and now a pittie mix, and a sweeter dog you'll never meet.

Could she potentially bite? Of course she could. Would she? Probably not. But I won't take the chance of leaving her unsupervised in situations where it could happen. She's a dog, it goes with the territory. That said, I have taken every possible precaution to see that we don't have an incident by, among other things, having her spayed, trained, socialized, leashed in unfamiliar situations, and because we live in an apartment building, introducing her properly to any new tenants who move in. I also make sure she's kept away from those tenants who are either timid of dogs or don't like them particularly. I immediately leash her if we're out in the back and a tenant who is not as sure of her comes out. I have instructed the building's kids on how to react when they see a dog.

It is up to us, the humans, to protect our furry charges -- and that includes taking the steps necessary to insure that they are the best canine citizens possible.

Rest in Peace, Max. Run free at the Bridge where no one can neglect or hurt you again.

JANUARY WALK

We walk, Sara and I,
Along the cold sidewalks of our city.

Dry footsteps mark our passage, city sounds in the distance.
Not the soft silence of new-fallen snow or swish of rain.

We pass the fallen trees of the Soltice season, cast off now as so much refuse,
But still the scent of douglas fir and scotch pine reaches out, memory-laden.

Sara stops to sniff each one. I look at her and laugh.
My laughter sounds, sharp in the frosty air, like the tinkling of glass ornaments long gone.

I think of Dalton on this very walk, marking his way along the trail from tree to tree.
I'd always thought it sacrilegious somehow, lifting a leg as we passed by.

Sara's never had the pleasure of an indoor tree.
Dalton saw to that.

They'd ask me, "Do you have a tree this year?"
And I would answer, "No. I have a male dog."

It's Raining, Dammit!

It's wet out there! I really don't like to have water, especially cold water, coming down on my head. Hummmph!

On the other hand, errr, paw, when it's cool or wet out, Mom is more likely to let me come with her in the car. I know she worries when it's warm 'cause it gets way too hot in there. She can't leave the windows rolled all the way down, 'cause she knows I'd be too tempted to jump out the window. I am pretty good about staying in the back seat when she tells me to.

Today she took me all over the place! First we went for a doctor appointment. It was really pouring at that point, so it wasn't so bad having to stay in the car. Mom had to make a run for it across the parking lot.

After that, we drove all the way to Costco for gasoline. Mom stayed on the streets rather than mess with the freeway on soggy days like this.

She got on the cell phone and was talking to her friend Linda. Of course, mom has a headset so that she keeps her hands on the wheel. Linda has a small dog, Sadie, who is a good friend. I almost broke Linda's nose a few years back. Well, it was her fault, really, she bent over to give me a kiss and I jumped up to meet her.

After Costco, Mom stopped at Nick's Market for Persian cucumbers. I'm not sure if I really like them or not. Sometimes I do. I like some veggies. Carrots are my favorite... and tomatoes.

Following that, we headed back toward home, but Mom decided to stop yet again at a nice book and gift shop. She said she needed to get some Eid presents. She made me stay in the car again.

Then we kind of drove around while Mom chatted with Linda.

We FINALLY got home and I was definitely ready for a potty break and a loooong nap!

So that's how my day went. It's all good.

Woof, woof,
Sara

'Possums!

Hi again. It's me, Sara.

Mom took off this evening for a while and left me at home. Hmmmph. I figured it was as good an excuse as any to take a nap, so I did.

When she got home around 9:30 or so, she took me out to the backyard. We live in an apartment complex and there's kind of a big area out back. Not much in the way of grass or anything, but I really like rolling around on the cement. Mom says there used to be a swimming pool back there, but I have to take her word for it, as it was long gone before I came to live here.

I love the backyard. I have a squirrel pal who like to play with me. It runs along the iron fence that surrounds the backyard and I bark and jump up and down and Mom says I'm so loud, I could wake the dead! I think I'll just settle for waking the neighborhood.

So tonight, we were out in the back, Mom playing video games on her cell phone while I did what I needed to do and sniffing around and, well, being a dog and doing dog stuff, when there it was, right there on the fence! The 'possum!

I started creating such a racket! Barking and jumping up and down and running back and forth while Mom tried desparately to catch me before I woke the neighbors new baby. She looked pretty funny tryng to catch me!

This possum lives under the building next door and uses the iron fence to travel from one yard to the next. I'd just love to get ahold of it, but it seems I'm a couple of inches too short to reach it.

Mom finally caught me and dragged me back upstairs -- but someday, I'll catch that thing!

Well, that's the adventure for tonight.

Bark atcha later,
Sara

A Quick Intro

I'm Sara. I'm cute. But everyone already knows that!

Mom brought me home from a mobile adoption site at the California Museum in Oakland. There were all kinds of artistic doghouses on display there, but they wouldn't let us doggies go in them.

Mom and I spent part of the afternoon in the grassy courtyard getting to know each other. Of course, she wouldn't let me off leash. Dang, she still won't, but that's because she knows I won't listen or come when she calls. C'mon? What do you expect? I'm a terrier. It's my job.

She's always telling people that she's seen me look the other way in order to not see the hand signals. Well, I'll let you in on a little secret: It's true!

My favorite "sports" are digging the fiberfill out of all Mom's pillows and comforters, chasing after my squirrel friend in the back yard, and terrorizing the possum that travels back and forth along the back fence at night. Mom usually drags me back into the house when I do that, since it's late at night. She says I'm too loud and the neighbors won't like it.

She calls me her "holy terrier". I think she thinks that's funny or something.

Actually, when it comes to people, well, what can I say? People rock. I just looooove people. Mom says I shouldn't bounce at them so much -- she says I weigh too much for that -- but I just can't help it sometimes. I get so excited and, well, I'm a dog. It's my job.

Well, I think it's time for another nap. My other favorite thing.

Later days,
Sara
